Demon infested laptop (nevermind..)
I have a Compaq CQ60, was a cheap $350 deal at staples for a dual core with 3gb ram, numpad keyboard, 15 something inch screen, couldn't go wrong.
Well, regardless of when it had vista, or now 7 professional on it, it hangs, 1/2 if the time when I go to put it in standby, hibernate, or whatever. I have to physically hold the power button to get it to shut off. It goes to turn off, and the screen turns black. The power light stays on, and the hard drive light flickers every second or so, in a pattern. I can even turn the wireless on and off again using the dedicated push button switch next to the power button.
I'm not sure how often it has done this, possibly explaining why it is sometimes drained of battery in my laptop bag, but I just noticed while it was in standby sitting next to me it turned itself back on, and was also hung there. Had to physically power it down.
I'm assuming because it made no difference of the OS, that it is something hardware related. Any ideas?
It has become more prominent lately, but was still a slight issue before the OS upgrade. Don't know if it was related but I had a defective hard drive issue from the same model I bought at best buy a few weeks before, and returned it. Since the HDD light keeps sequentially flashing when its shut down I wonder if the HDD is dying or something. The test built into the bios didn't show any immediate failures. I'll run the extended test. Everyones google threads are about it not turning on, instead of it having problems turning off. I'm at a complete loss what to try to replace. The warranty is also up.
edit: even though I was almost sure this was a hardware problem, as vista shared the issue. I talked to an HP support tech on chat to figure out what is up with the warranty (I wasnt sure if I had another month or so, comp is about a year old) and he managed to fix it by uninstalling some ACPI Event button thing in the device manager and having windows automatically install it again.
I had a friend with a similar issue on his Compaq so I guess if this has happened to anyone else, there's your fix.
I can't lock/delete this so any mod feel free to. Thanks.

Glad you got it solved!
I had this weird thing when I upgraded my HP TX2 Tablet to Windows 7 where the fingerprint reader would shock me every time I used it (like a little harder than a friction shock you get from your car or a door knob) I even sent the laptop into repair because it was only a month old, and they told me it was because the fingerprint driver was not compatable with Windows 7! Sometimes its the oddest of things that you would never think about. Luckily they came out with a compatible driver after a few months.
