magnitude 5.5 apparently, originating near ottawa. i'm about 4 hours southwest, felt it for like fifteen seconds. wasn't even strong enough to wake my dad/pets up from their naps. they're already trying to sensationalize it all over the news.

"what immediately went through my head was that situation in haiti and we just thought, we better get out of here"

"it felt like a train was just about to rip right through the building, everything was trembling so severely"

"it was a brutal shaking and what surprised me was the huge crashing sound that came before it, it was like explosions"

"people are having difficulty reaching their loved ones"

lol, and apparently they evacuated parliament. what a bunch of pussies. apparently the worst damages are cracked windows and slightly damaged older buildings.

this is ridiculous. all this over a 5.5? that's strong enough to knock stuff of shelves and that's about it.

It's the strongest quake in almost a century to hit the Ottawa area, so it's newsworthy, even if it isn't exactly apocolyptical. We get weak ones (3-5 magnitude) every few years that are rarely noticeable. We also don't get any other kind of natural disasters outside of a proper Canadian winter.

I'm on the 7th floor of a military controlled building in downtown Ottawa. Naturally I spent the first 2.5 seconds trying to figure out if it was an attack or quake. Then I stood up and put my sandals on in case we were going to evacuate while national defense figured out WTF was going on.

In the end my building didn't evacuate, but most of the ones nearby did.

It was pretty creepy because the entire building continued to vibrate for almost 5 minutes after the quake. I could feel it through the floor, walls and furniture. Then the entire government phone network was jammed as thousands of people all tried to call home at once. Took about 15 minutes to get a line.

Wrong, Building Codes anywhere on the East Coast is not the same as California(where you live). It only takes a 5.5 earthquake in NYS for a lot of buildings to go down. I saw it on Sci-Trek where they stated that most buildings and bridges in NYS are built on soft sediment, and have old foundations. Soft sediment is more susceptible to Liquefaction (rocks get loosened by water shooting up into it because of tremors).

A lot of buildings in NYS (new york state) are really old just like the rocks that they're built on. Bedrock (harder minerals and rocks) is not that close to the surface either in the areas built on soft sediment. There is some more stuff, but just go look up Sci-Trek Earthquakes in New York. It was on a few months ago, cause it was just made.

You guys overestimate his reading comprehension, it takes time for his Jesus addled brain to read and process an article so that he can bold/highlight the important shit for the rest of us.

I expect something tomorrow at the earliest

I was talking to someone else, read "ontario" and "brewery still standing", then posted while talking.

Fucking hate when they do that shit to me, at least I didn't toss in the words "no onions, no lettuce" from the irl convo.
