I didn't want to hop on the bash max bandwaggon but I must admit this post almost made me fall out of my chair. Max is different than someone who simply enjoys reading publications, he almost has to let others know he enjoys it. You can tell from his posts, especially in the random image threads. His avatar, signature and general demeanor reflect someone who's trying to give the impression of being a great intellect. This has changed a lot from a lot of the debates he got into years ago where he would dive very heavily into 1st year philosophy. I haven't seen him use the matrix argument in a while so I guess he's outgrown it.

The "matrix argument" is just the catchphrase I use to describe anyone who argues that we can't trust our perception to the extent that basic axioms of science are put into question. That's not to say human perception is infallible, but it's all we have for extrapolating the nature of reality. Once you go down that path any further debate is pointless because anything could be true and we just wouldn't know it because we were incapable of perceiving it. It doesn't have to relate to the matrix, but the matrix is one of the widely known examples of the argument. Generally the only people you see make the argument are 1st year philosophy students and anti-science spiritual nuts. It's always funny when people bring it up too, because it's like they've considered something that no one else has realized.

I understood what you meant. I can think of 4 sci fi movies, off the top of my head, that are about this exactly. I myself used to think about that kind of stuff a lot when I was like 12. Get in debates with my friends etc... But then, ya know, you grow up.
