Need for Speed: World (previously known as Need for Speed: World Online) is an upcoming installment in the long-running racing video game Need for Speed franchise published by Electronic Arts. This iteration is being co-developed by EA Black Box and EA Singapore , the first MMORG in the Need for Speed series since Motor City Online, exclusively for Windows-based PCs. World is scheduled for release worldwide on July 20, 2010.[1][2]

What's this online racing thing all about?

Need For Speed World, for those of you who didn't see our E3 coverage, is an MMO racing game where you get to drive through the best of the Need For Speed franchise. From Hot Pursuit to classic racing, you'll be in a giant city with thousands of other racers.

As you race, you'll rise through the driving ranks, earning access to more vehicles, tracks, and game types. You'll also earn yourself more driver skills at higher levels and more customization options for your car, so you'll look sweet while leaving everyone in the dust.

If this sounds like something you want to do, then grab a key below and visit the key redemption page over at Need For Speed World. The beta doesn't start until the 28th, so you'll have some time to get your racing skills prepared. Vroom vroom!

already played couple weeks ago, it should be a good game, but it still had too many bugs and too much lag, and level/itens made too much of a diference, at first levels if you race against a higher level you had no chance at all.

idk, but i think it will be free to play but you will need to buy the currency so you can buy the itens to use in the races (like mario kart), it sucks because they make a lot of difference, if you dont have any, you will lose. But you can earn them when you win races. There is also regular money to buy new cars and stuff for it.

the game is really like a mmo with cars, you can run around in the cities and there are some places where you can race against other people in several ways, you can also run away from cops and all that stuff that comes with NFS games.

Pre-ordering from EA store gives you the starter pack for free so I'm kind of in a bind right now. I have 20$ on this debit I forgot I had, and now I can't decide on to use it on the steam deals or this. Guess I'll see my judgment on monday.

Played this in closed beta. As someone who generally loves NFS, I was thoroughly unimpressed.

With the new beta for Need for Speed World getting ready for release this Monday, we thought we'd provide you with the release notes and known issues in list form.

Release Notes

-New Region: Players can now explore the new Camden region in addition to taking part in the new race events located here.
-New Races: A variety of new race events, both circuit and sprint, have been made available throughout the world.
-Driver Level Increase: The max Driver Level has been raised to level 50, with new unlocks and Driver Skills now available.
-Performance Packages: Players can now customize their vehicle with a variety of Performance Packages that contain performance upgrades, as well as body kits, spoilers etc.
-New Cars: New cars have been added including the Audi R8 and Chevrolet Corvette C6 Z06
-New Car Rentals: New rental cars have been made available. These vehicles now come pre-installed with Performance Packages and body kits
-Private Match: Players can now invite up to 7 of their friends into private multiplayer races
-Meeting Place: The stadium in Rosewood now functions as a Meeting Place. This is a non-race events that grants access to a photo mode camera for taking photos to show off your own car, or to host your own car show
-Time of Day: A new Time of Day system has been added. Watch as the world cycles from dawn to dusk as you play
-Event Improvements: Previously unlocked events will now remain playable regardless of Driver Level. Events closer to a Player’s Driver Level will be highlighted, but older events will remain available for racing
-Help System: An improved help system has been added that displays tips and tutorials throughout the game. In addition, the Game Guide (previously available from the website) has been made accessible from within the game
-Group Chat: Players can now invite friends to participate in private group chat. To do this, bring-up the context menu by right-clicking on a player name or car and select “Invite to Group”
-World Map/Mini Map Improvements: Both the World Map and Minimap have been remodeled. In addition, the World Map now displays event activity levels allowing Players to find matches even easier
-SpeedBoost Catalog Improvements: The SpeedBoost catalog has been expanded with even more items available for purchase
-Tier Restricted Races: Some events have now been limited to a specific Tier of vehicles

Known Issues

-As this is Beta Software, it is recommended to uninstall previous versions of the game before installing the latest game launcher
-Players can continue to spend Boost on Rep Progression Amplifiers after reaching level 50 but this will have no effect
-Quitting out of a single player race currently counts as a DNF in the Player’s statistics
-Rarely, the Standings screen will report inaccurate/no times, or a ‘Retrieving Profile’ message
-Blocking a Player does not prevent that Player from being added to your Friends List
-Occasionally, spamming certain keys while entering/exiting the Safehouse will cause the game to crash
-The Nissan 350Z will occasionally lose its headlight texture when smashing into an object
-If a Player attempts to purchase a Powerup with insufficient SpeedBoost from the post-race/pursuit screen, the game will hang
-There is a known issue preventing some supported controllers from functioning on 32-bit Operation System

Lol, I posted a thread about this game a month ago. I put a 10% off coupon code (d2dfatwallet10 - idk if it works still) if you got it through Direct2Drive. Perhaps it will still work. It's not much but it's still money.

I thought the game wasn't too bad considering it's still under heavy work. For a game with no subscription it'll be worth $18 to me in the end if nothing else just for outrunning cops all day.
