    megapixels resolution?

    How do i translate megapixels into resolution so I can compare quality?

    Found a 5.0 megapixel usb webcam on ebay for $5.99 (including shipping). wanted to know if this was a good deal and how good/bad the quality would be. (my laptop's built in cam is 2.0 megapixels)

    1920x1080 ~= 2 megapixels
    2560x1600 ~= 4 megapixels

    Horizontal resolution * vertical resolution gives you the total pixel count, with a megapixel being 1 million pixels.

    To give you an idea, I have a 12 megapixel videocamera that can be used as a webcam, and it still looks like shit. So really, a webcam is a webcam.

    Doesn't matter how many MP the camera can capture. It's going to be compressed down to 320p or something tiny to stream.

    Even with actual cameras for taking pictures, the quality of the lens, software, settings etc are far more important than MP because you're always going to shrink it before uploading anyway.
