Thanks for the tips so far, any thoughts on the mini cooper s?

Trying to keep it under 25k or even 20k, don't want all the new job money going to a car (I hate car payments). If it were to be used I think my range would be around 10-12k which this local speed3 falls just over.

They're good cars, they tend to hold value making them more expensive used. They are incredibly expensive to maintain though, BMW parts.

    Probably will lease.
If you're leasing, you can consider the new European entry level cars like the Audi A3, Mercedes CLA, and BMW 2-series. They start out right under or just barely above 30k.

I had a Mini Cooper (not S) rental in Seattle over the summer. The road noise was ridiculous, just awful. It handled well though and had some good pep. Could never fit in the back seat no matter how much I wanted to though. My cousin barely fit and she's a small person.

If you are looking to buy one, don't bother. You will be paying out the nose for every bit of maintenance the vehicle needs. There was also a specific year set where the CooperS was basically a rolling pile of shit in regards to reliability. I can't remember what those years were though. The same model year range standard MiniCooper was phenomenal reliability wise.

I'd still recommend to avoid anything European if you are buying anything used without a decent legit warranty. The repair costs will kill any amount of fun/joy the car will bring.

If I went the mini route it would be a lease, the new S seems to be getting great reviews on every site.

Pretty much the only thing I'd get used is a speed3, every thing else I'm looking at is new in the 18-25k range to lease not buy (including speed3's). Gas mileage is becoming a big factor though and I'm not entirely sure I'll want to drive 106 miles to school and back on a stick.

Ahh brand new ones with a warranty, disregard my previous post then.... especially on a lease. Euro cars usually have some pretty awesome lease deals as well. It's why you see so many new audi's and bmw's on the road.

    Sounds great. What mods?

I was surprised they didn't have some kind of air mover at the front of the car. That can be pretty dangerous.

I was hoping you'd say the fan was off the screen lol. Not a bad mod list at all. I was considering the Boss 302 for the longest time, but when I was in the market the prices were still incredibly inflated due to the ridiculous demand.

What are you pushing HP/TQ wise?

So found out today my new company car is one of our new 2014 Ford Fusions. I'm not mad at that. Otherwise it would have been one of the old 2011 Impalas the other guys have.

I'll probably end up selling mine soon, getting an aluminator motor.

Test drove the base camaro today, still haven't gotten to the speed3 or wrx/imprezas, but I'm starting to lean towards automatics since I'll be doing so much traveling to school.

Wouldn't that be more incentive to get a manual?

I'm afraid I'll get sick of it after 100 miles every other day.

Have you driven a stick before? I don't think you really get tired of it. It becomes so mindlessly automated after a month of driving that you may as well call it an automatic.

Yes but not as an everyday vehicle, I've been in automatics since I've been able to drive and get my fill from the motorcycle. It does become muscle memory and automated on that though so I guess it would be the same.

Guess I'll go back to looking at the focus st and speed3, think the wrx is pushing out of the price range since the camaro was a friendly 25.

Pretty sure if any dealer magically let's me walk out with 0 down @ 300/month for any of the cars I'm looking at I'll take it right there since insurance is going to fuck me on these cars. I hate NJ. Really not looking to put much down.

The Chevy dealer offered me 300 a month with 2k down, definitely didn't want that. Not when I can just go get a fusion, passat, or possibly a Mini for 250 or less with 0 due at signing.

Get financing from an outside bank. As a first step see if a bank will loan you a small amount to buy the car. You'll have more control over the payments that way.

We did a 6 month short term loan for my speed. The payments were high but it was paid off quickly.

I do a lot of long distance driving and unless it's stop and go traffic the whole way you won't get sick of it. It does become second nature and gives you more control in inclement weather.

If anything, I'd say the manual keeps longer driving more interesting (unless again as Shinzon said, you're in a ton of stop and go traffic).
