Personally, I think it all depends on the type of driving rather than anything else. I used to have a manual, but drove from just north of Baltimore (outside the beltway) to College Park (just inside the DC beltway) for work (it was roughly a 92 mile daily commute). I had to deal with a lot of traffic and tons of stop-and-go, and after a while manual just got really annoying. If I didn't have to deal with that nonsense, I'd have stuck with a manual, but I did and do so I'm glad I switched to an automatic.

I will not ever personally own an automatic car unless its a twin disk. And since those cars are typically 70K plus, it's safe to say I won't have one for a while lol.

I also do not live near a lot of traffic. I'd have to literally live in NYC or a similar area in order to own an automatic car.

Meh, easy doable once you get a little experience. I had Ragnell driving stick in my car in like 20 minutes. Empty parking lot, but again the hills and everything else come with practice. He stalled once or twice, didn't grind the clutch at all. As much as traffic does suck in a manual, it's the best thing for a new manual driver. That's assuming you aren't an idiot and continually grind the clutch at every attempt. When in doubt, let the car stall... don't grind the clutch.

I can sit on hill with the car in first gear completely motionless, just from appropriate pressure on the gas and clutch. I would expect anyone who's driven stick more than a year would be able to do the same. Could be just because I've been driving manual for 14 years now, but I seriously doubt it.

I love driving a stick shift, but it's so impractical here. You can't really get anywhere without constant stop and go traffic.

I learned how to drive a stick shift during a snowstorm, complete with ice and white outs! That was fun, but let me tell you, I learned really well lol.

I learned to drive a stick at an early age, but didn't get to really drive one years later. I bought a used 2003 Toyota Matrix base model in 2005 with about 20k miles on it. I still drive that damn thing today. I have learned how to piss people off during the height of rush hour in Houston traffic. I can run between 1st and 2nd for the 5 mile stretch that takes 20 mins without touching my brakes, and only shifting. I've made it a game to piss off all those sorry ass luxury sports cars drivers that drive a car, but don't get HOW to drive a car. To me, driving a stick is the purest form of enjoyment you can experience on the road.

On to my Matrix.. Whoever the previous owner was took pretty good care of it. The minute I test drove it, I had to have it. It was zippy, responsive, and a whole lot of fun. 9 years, and a total of 130,000 miles on her, she's still a great ride. The clutch is finally starting to slip, and I had to replace my CAT around 100k, along with a few engine gaskets, but it really has been a stress free vehicle. Go test drive a Matrix, and see what you think.

I've been driving a manual since August 2012 (2013 Sonic LS Turbo Hatchback) and I'm never going back to an automatic. It's so awesome when people can't borrow your car. On the other hand, it sucks when they're learning and they want to borrow your car. It really.... grinds my gears (hur hur). Oh well...

I will not let any of my friends learn on my car.

4 people are allowed to drive me car because they are proficient enough or more proficient than I. My cousin, my fiancee, my dad, and myself. My brother learned stick as well, but he's not very good at it and has been driving an automatic for the past few years. To his credit, he took the driving test in a manual car and passed the first time. I'm sure not many kids could have done that around here.

I'm the same was Toki. I let Ragnell drive my car for like 15 minutes in an empty parking lot. Other than him, my dad has driven it 3 times 1/4 down the road to the bank, and my wife has driven it once when I first got it. I've had the car since 2009 lol.

I loved having a standard for that exact reason, too. It really baffled me how many complete strangers in the Army wanted to borrow my truck after knowing me for like thirty minutes. Like why the fuck would I let someone who was essentially a complete stranger borrow my vehicle?

Not sure anyone else in the military ran into that, I had a really long training phase and I was one of the few privates to have a car since my dad brought it down for me, and everyone wanted to drive it for some fucking reason. Not just no, but fuck no.

Most of the time, the fact that it was a standard was enough to get them to go away.

I really miss that little truck though.

I'm normally driving a manual 2 seater. So no one asks for rides, and no one asks to drive it. Best of both worlds. It just sucks that I cannot fit my golf bag in the trunk, I have to ride to the course with it in the passenger seat lol.

Congrats. Any modifications planned, or just driving it around as a commuter?

It's my every day car. No modifications in sight. I'm a grad student and I desperately need it to not spontaneously explode in the next 7-10 years. Just going to enjoy the drive wherever I go.
