Froyo is pretty sweet on the X, I'm missing root though.

One of the first things you might want to do is download Launcher Pro or ADW Launcher. The default launcher, Touchwiz is kind of laggy and slow. I've used both and prefer Launcher Pro. You may or may not want to look into downloading Advanced Task Killer. You can use this to autokill apps that are running in the background when you're not using them. I've noticed quite a bit of an extended battery life with it, but people's mileage varies.
As far as roms and such, not a whole lot out at the moment. The XDA website has information about rooting, lag fixes, etc. There's a vanilla 2.1 rom about to come out sometime soon. 2.2 from Samsung might be coming in September. Just waiting for everything to be released at this point.
ATK doesn't extend battery life. Android already handles killing and sleeping tasks appropriately. Instead, changing data settings/hardware settings is a much better way to go about extending battery life on your phone.
@Silent the bootloader is only locked to unsigned kernals, not from stock software which is what you were putting onto the phone. I'm guessing you tired to update without reverting back to stock and "bricked" your phone because you didn't read the directions. Instead of taking your phone back and getting it replaced and wasting the gas and time to do that, you could have sat down, spent all of 30 seconds downloading what you needed and fixed the problem yourself.
ATK apps can generally be a very bad idea, because Android can and will reopen closed apps on it's own if it needs them for background processing for whatever reason. The process of restarting the app is going to slow down your phone and be eating at CPU cycles while it restarts, often moreso then if you just let the program sit idle on it's own. If you're rooted you can use the program Autostarts to see this in action.
It's a much better idea to keep track of what programs on your phone are potentially eating away at your battery, and to find alternatives or just uninstall them all together.
I'm going on vacation for two weeks and was hoping to toss some TV shows on my Droid to watch on the flight, etc. Any idea if there's an app that can handle avi file TV shows and movies?
RockPlayer, it can handle most every commonly used video format. Just make sure you download the right version for your phone (Should be the Arm7 version for Droid)
Awesome, works great. Thanks!![]()
Iono, maybe it's placebo (not going to spend the dollar or find an apk of autostarts) but my battery life has increased after using ATK. I've not noticed any side effects so far, and anything that reopens automatically that is needed by the os can just be set to ignore to avoid reopening. I may try with/without and compare battery times, just to see how much of a difference it may or not make.
FWIW I've heard that it's not really needed in Froyo, but until that comes out for the Captivate I have no first hand experience. AT&T sucks and has the worst selection of Android phones, and since I'm stuck with them, haven't been able to choose a decent one till now.

So
I'm rather unimpressed with it so far. I know it doesn't have jit, but my phone feels very sluggish. On boot up before froyo I had about 220 mb. Now on start up I have about 150 mb. I am gonna trever back to 2.1 until official release.
It's well known that the TI series processors don't get much of a performance boost from 2.2 except at low clock speed. However the droid series is always slow at boot. Wait then start hammering on the phone and see.
Yea except when I downloaded froyo I restarted and left it on overnight, was still sluggish today. Restarted and everything. I heard there are no speed increases because there is no jit in the leak... I honey don't even know what that means, meh.
I found this today...
Get the HTC Desire camera on Nexus One without loading HTC Sense
I wonder if this would work, or if i get it, will the front camera work or allow it to switch to 8MPOne of the sticking points of using the Desire ROM with HTC Sense on the Nexus One was that, at least for a while, the camera wasn't fully functional. That's been fixed, and now you can do one better and run the Desire's camera software -- which has a few more features than the stock Nexus One camera software -- without having to load the entire Desire ROM along with Sense.
It's a basic update from MoDaCo -- just download it to the root of your microSD card, reboot into recovery and apply the zip file. That simple, and it's working at the full 5 megapixels. A few more screen shots after the break.
Alright, so I tried to flash my phone back to 2.1 using the RLD Lite 4.7, but it didn't work... It said it was fine, but then when I tried to turn it on, it just kept doing the boot loop thing again, so I went and reupdated the phone back to froyo using that thing, and it's back to normal. Anyone know what I did wrong when I tried to flash it?
Nah it's in a file, I wound up wiping memory again, man I rawk at this droid thing. Also, I purchased an app early (weather and clock widget), and I was able to dl it on my new phone, but after I wiped this time, the ability to purchase it is gone, I believe I'm linked to the right gmail account.
Edit: Oh I'm not linked... guess I'm SoL.
So i was finally able to get my EVO 4G after having to wait since im a 3rd party seller and im trying to figure out a way to video chat with other people on PC. Is there a way to do it?
no, because skype is a fucking faggot
(they turned off fring/skyping from phone to pc)
Dammit I was so looking forward to video chatting >_<
So Seanr, how does one get free Tapatalk?

Just side load the app onto your phone. You can pretty much google any paid app and get a free copy to load on your phone.
