I just learned Iphone can stream netflix movies to their phone. Can anything on android do this yet?
nope not yet. Closest thing Android has is the Media Hub that the Epic 4g has.
A few questions since I'm thinking about getting an Android phone:
- Anyone here switch from an iPhone to an Android phone and don't regret your decision?
- Which Android phone would you recommend? (Prefer non-Verizon because I don't get a signal at work and don't care for a keyboard.)
- What's your monthly phone bill like? Currently I'm paying about $80/mo. with AT&T and that's with 450 minutes, 1500 text messages, and 5000 nights/weekends and a 22% employee discount.... I'm also paying about $12/mo. with Best Buy for insurance on the phone and if something does happen to it, I have to send it out for 2-4 weeks.
I've switched from android to iOS4 back to Android.
I regreted it at first since I went to the OG droid which I hated but since I've had the Epic I've loved it.
Think the consensus is its either the EVO or the Epic at this point both are with Sprint.
my bill is around 80 dollars with a 20% employee discount that I bullshitted about.. It has 450 land line mins and unlimited everything else with Nights starting at 7pm this is including the 10 dollar premium data 4g charge and 7 dollar a month Insurance.
The whole Galaxy S series are decent phones, not just the Epic. T-Mobile has the Vibrant, AT&T the Captivate. They lack the keyboard and front facing camera, but I've not needed a physical keyboard except for playing an emulator and don't need the camera. Processor/Screensize are the same I believe. I've not looked if GPS is any better on the Epic, but it's not great on most of the Galaxy S series. If you use a lot of data, T-Mobile and Sprint still have unlimited data plans, AT&T doesn't unless you have a grandfathered plan. Sprint also has 4G, which you pay an extra $10 for. Good if you live in an area that has it, useless if not. AT&T also adds all it's crap bloatware by default and other restrictions, which is easily removed are you install custom roms, etc.
Not personally used the Evo, so Krandor or someone that has it can let you know about that.
From what I hear, the Galaxy S that got the 2.2 leaked update (don't remember which one,) the GPS is working flawlessly.
Also, here's a question:
Do any of the wireless tethers work with a DS? I'm in school so I can't use a router to connect my DS to the internets, and was really looking forward to using my phone
"Wireless Tether" doesn't work because it doesn't support ad-hoc, MobileAP doesn't work because you can't turn the password off, and DS doesnt support WPA :<
FroYo tethering on my HTC Desire has WPA and Open as security options, I'd guess Open will work for a DS but WPA definitly won't as pointed out.
Even more excited for froyo nowthanks, good to know there's still hope in the future!
Also, about widget locker someone mentioned before:
I'm having a few issues. It seems like any button wakes up the phone and turns the lock screen on, I don't want that. Because of this, I can't adjust the media volume while the phone is "off" with the volume buttons, which I am able to do without widget locker.
And one other thing: Which launcher do you guys prefer?
For WidgetLocker, go into Settings > Buttons and Inputs, check the Allow Volume Buttons option. Still wakes the screen, but allows you to adjust the volume. If you're wanting to adjust it without turning the screen on, I think it's supposed to do that by default, just doesn't seem to work. Try setting Easy Wake Mode off under Advanced, and setting Retain System Keyguard on. Will mess around with it.
As for launchers, I usually stick with Launcher Pro, but occasionally use ADW.Launcher. They're both rather customizable and are faster than TouchWiz for me. And for some reason people think the 3d app drawer on Launcher Pro is awesome.
Edit: After messing around with it and reading some, doesn't seem like much you can do about the volume buttons waking the screen with WidgetLocker. According to the dev, it's a rom issue, something about the system keyguard. http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dro...tml#post817863
Program for rooted phones called ShootMe. Lets you shake the phone to take a screenshot.
I am SO annoyed, everytime I unlock my Droid X, it unlocks in landscaping mode, so I need to turn it everytime to do anything since I am a homescreen portrait style kinda guy, how do I prevent it from going to landscape after unlocking?
I have gone back and forth on Widget Locker, and still haven't convinced myself that I need to use it. I do know that the Dev is pretty approachable though, and often addresses issues people have in various 'official' forums. Here is a thread that is pretty full of info and I know he posts there if the answer isn't already IN the thread. WidgetLocker Thread on Droid Forums (as posted above it seems)
As for a Launcher, I have LauncherPro Plus and love it. I have never had any issues, it plays well with everything else I use on my homescreens. Ultimately I think I would have been just as happy with ADW, but grabbed LauncherPro first. Themes are nice, though who knows... ADW may have them as well. Not that I use a themed LauncherPro. Everything I use for icons/widgets are created by myself anyway.
EDIT: HA... sorry, was looking at my 'updated topics' and replied to Julian before I realized there was a new page...
Here is the wallpaper =)
The rest of that home screen is just a combination of:
Extended Controls Widget - for the custom toggles on the top.
Tajm - for the text clock
BattStatt - (linked the free version, there is also the pro) for the text battery
LauncherPro with the dock background set to 'none' and custom MnmlText Icons by Ultralinx.
Shootme (needs Root) - for screenshots
Enjoy!
only thing I can think off is take off landscape mode in the settings.
are you using the stock home UI or one off the marketplace? if its the latter it might be a bug of the 3rd party UI.
@Omnipotent
What launcher are you using? On Launcher Pro, press the menu button > Preferences > Behavior Settings and disable Auto-Rotation. Will keep the home screen from auto rotating.
For ADW.Launcher go to ADW Settings > System Settings > Home Orientation.
Rooted, using Rubix focused .3
That rom uses ADW.Launcher as the stock UI. So follow what I said for it in my last post.
Vibrant 2.1 (rooted) - Stock Rom - Launcher pro (dock style/hidden notification bar/removed names from app icons)
