Comprehensive Android Phone/MODs/ROMs Thread

Thinking about finally getting an Android phone really soon. What's the average life for a phone like the Evo, Nexus S or any other Android phone? Friend of mine letting me use his HTC Hero since he doesn't use anymore so I can get used to the OS. I rooted it and installed Gingerbread on it and it runs okay but with nearly nothing running, battery life is like 3hr. This is with most things turned off. Only apps running are beautiful widgets and ZDBox majority of the time.

Also, best screen size and keyboard for someone w/ fat fingers? I currently have an iPhone and the keyboard's great but using the Hero, I have to use the edge of my fingernails at times to accurately type on the on-screen KB.

you may want to look into other keyboards then. Tons of them in the market. As for battery life, 3 hours of screen brightness on full? and playing games? that be really good. My phone lasts me a full day(thunderbolt) and this phone is said to be really bad on battery life. Its hacked and I do have setcpu profiles running so thats a big way to help.

If you hack a phone and devs have better kernals out with LV/ULV you can get much better life, some Droid X users claim 2 full days of use(48 hours+ at times)

Real answer: How far you are willing to mess with the phone and it really depends on the phone itself, some phones can not take ULV, some cant even take LV kernels. I have been very lucky with my phones thus far. My Moto Droid was a champ that could take the ultra kernels that went up to 1.4 GH and was ULV. and my TB is running well on a LV.

edit: my moto droid went on my shelf and was left on after I bought my TB. I did a test to see how long it could last. No use or anything just left on. It lasted 6 days and a random amount of hours.

Thunderbolt uses a second generation snapdragon. I believe its slightly diferent than the N1/Evo/Incredible proccessor

yes you would be right, kernels for the TB are not going to work on the EVO. I can say that for a fact. The EVO was very much unlocked and the CPU was not even close to being pushed to what the TB is now.(owned a EVO for a short time and rooted it)

Are you leaving wifi on? That could be a possible reason for the low battery life.

Yeah I'm leaving the wifi on. I should be turning off the wifi when not in use? And I'm thinking of getting the Thunderbolt but the only problem I'd have is at my job, Verizon gets no signal...

wifi should turn itself off when the screen is off. I left wifi on that 6 day long marathon my moto droid just did.

if not go to wifi settings > advanced > and see that its not set to never sleep.

Google pulls psx4droid from market, dev offers it for free. I guess now is a good time to get it. You can download it at the droid life site.

So I got a dell streak a couple weeks ago and I freaking love it. Only thing is that its stuck on 1.6 (donut) and most of what i've read says that 2.2 & < are much better.

I'm honestly paranoid of unlocking and installing a new rom, if only because my usual network of 'help I broke this' is 20 hours away in another state now that i've moved.

Am I being paranoid? Anyone have any suggestions? This is my first smart phone, and reading through this thread has just managed to confuse the hell out of me.

its possible to update it, and I like the screen size. i only use my phone for texting anyway, so i dont care that the phone part of it is crap.

Go in a store and play with newer android phones with 2.1-2.3 on them.

Get something with 2.2 granted at least it is 1.6 so it is somewhat of a upgrade and you do get a lot more apps. But 2.2 is a even bigger update.

If you can't return it and there are roms that give you the needed update do it. Read as much as you can and get recovery and root going.

Anyone has had any issues with drop calls using CM or any custom roms? I've been getting a SHITTON of drop calls and it's just to the point where it's just unacceptable, I thinking its mostly Verzion but it could be the phone radio or someshit being messed with

I dont think its verizon, my TB is working fine(not using CM mod)

try flashing a new rom and seeing if that fixes it. Or just reflash CM, that can sometimes fix things that bug out.

Well it's been happening even before I loaded up CM, it did it on Bugless beast as well, and I flashed 3 times before i loaded CM7

what phone and what radio are you running? if you went from like donut to froyo/gb you most likely need to update your radio as well.
