Comprehensive Android Phone/MODs/ROMs Thread

i know the answer to this is most likely "do research you lazy prick" and i feel like i have but i'm wondering if i'm missing any good options. sorry if it's the wrong thread but i didn't think another "help me decide" thread would go over well either.

i'm still on an old ass iphone 3G/AT&T and it's treated me well but it's slow as shit, i want to upgrade, and my contract was up in march. i want to go android - not that i disliked the iphone at all, but because i want something new to "learn" and/or screw around with (rooting, etc). i've played with a friend's Droid X, another's Thunderbolt, and a few other HTC phones random people have had (all were great at the time). since they are now realistic options i feel like my only 2 req's are 4G support & dual core cpus (why not?).

i don't love AT&T and i feel like going back to Verizon would be best, but i don't really have any loyalty to any certain carrier.

i don't have a problem in waiting until june or july... would the Bionic be my best bet for what i've stated? (i realize the Bionic got canceled and what's coming out now isn't the original Bionic, whatever). that seems to be the only phone coming out anytime soon that i've seen much of that matches my req's - am i missing anything major? the Thunderbolt is great, but it feels like waiting 2 more months would mean much less-dated hardware.

Verizon has no dual core/4g phone as of now. The only 4g phone is the Thunderbolt, the change is also a 4g but its still on hold.(stores have it but cant sell it)

The Bionic might be best, however there is no real date for when it will be released.

Btw to make something a ringtone it - the sound file must be placed in a particular folder.

/sdcard/media/alarms
/sdcard/media/notifications
/sdcard/media/ringtones

If you want to set a song as a ringtone just open the music player and long press the song. Unfortunately this doesn't let you pick which part of the song so it'll play from the start.

As for rooting/unlocking; as Dejet said check XDA-Devs forum or try theunlockr.com they usually have guides for various phones.

What do you do after you've bought the most powerful smartphone to yet grace the Android universe? Some timid folks would urge you to just enjoy it, but if you're like us, you'll probably want to know just how high that dual-core Exynos 4210 birdie could fly. The processor inside the Galaxy S II started off life at 1GHz, then got sped up by Samsung to 1.2GHz just before release, and has now been taken all the way to 1.5GHz thanks to coolbho3000 over on the xda-developers forum. He's been nice enough to provide the source code and instructions necessary to reproduce this stable overclock on your Galaxy S II, but don't rush off just yet -- there's video of the GSII romping through Quadrant and Linpack after the break.

Droid x2 dropping this month for verizon. Gonna be first dual core phone with gingerbread. No 4g though.

Also netflix now works for a select few phones. I get it to open on my DX with froyo but our won't play any video unless I install GB on it and gb coming out this week. DL link for netflix on the main page of that droid life page

My 18-month mark is coming up so I can upgrade with att. I plan to get the motorola atrix (I already know the docking ports/laptop are not worth the $$) the reviews for the phone alone are pretty good. Anyone tried it/hate it?

Upgrading from iphone 3gs btw. Switching to android primarily to get away from itunes. I want drag-and-drop file management.

I dont no if root has fixed it, but the atrix suffers from no 3rd party installing. If you DL apps from the net or amazon app store you wont get to use it. Outside that im told the phone is great. Think it also is getting an update to make its 4g work for real lol.

So called T-Mo and realized that my contracts been up for a couple months now. Might treat myself to an upgrade for this N1 sometime this summer. Dual core it up.

Grabbed the new LauncherPro off the Market. Quite like the "Real" homescreen looping. I was getting a bit tired of the "fake" loop and its odd ... flippiness? It was just weird. I ahve my own custom icons for everything else so the Packs and the Label Options don't do much for me. All in all though, the looping was worth the update alone.

I REALLY hate Itunes, but to be honest my primary smartphone use is internet. Apps are a fun 10 minute distraction every now and then if they are free/on sale for .99 down from 5+, but I don't have much interest in side-loading custom stuff other than my non-itunes library of music and vid files. This phone (atrix) seems to be the one of the fastest (processing) out there for my primary use and it supposedly runs flash better than most/all as well.

Would it still be a fail for that usage?

Ha I bricked my phone trying to install GB lol. Tried to put .595 first instead of going in order. And for done reason rsdlite wasnt picking up my dx on both my laptops so I just put an insurance claim and got me a new one


But good news, new netflix apps popping up on xda

GB got leaked again for Epic, which I read is very stable and also is the only way to run Netflix so far for the epic. Holding out til official roms based on GB as I just finally got a rom that runs great and has great battery life. Quite happy with the Epic. I use the keyboard a lot more, especially with the game gripper attachment, makes roms a lot better to play.
