So, ice cream sandwich update came down to my Transformer Prime last night. It's so nice mannnnnn. It also actually improved my device's wifi range and stability too!

For example, a $600 phone sells for $300 on contract then they add a $15 fee every month to cover the other $300.

I've never heard of this before and it really doesn't make sense. Is he crazy? Or am I the idiot who has never noticed this fee on my bill?
Like Seanr said, it's simply added to the cost of your phone.

I think it actually worked out slightly cheaper to buy a phone upfront, but I figured I'd rather pay the extra tiny bit over two years or something for the convenience of not having to.

All you really have to do is go to the T-Mobile website and compare the value plans and regular plans. You can get unlimited talking, texting and 2gb of "high speed data" for $70/month normally and qualify for a subsidized phone, or $50/month on a value plan, and I'm pretty sure the subsidized phone is the only difference. A lot of the value plans are like that, just normal plans that are $20/month cheaper and don't offer subsidized phones as part of the contract. Pretty blatant, and nice imo, since they're actually passing on the savings from not having to subsidize a phone to the people who have a phone or buy their own for the duration of a contract.

one of my friends had that with his phone(think it was moto blur old OS 1.6?) and the way to view them was to save the files. I could not find a way to view them in the MMS format outside a slideshow.

Just read the previews of the Sony Xperia S from CES... holy shit I'm in love. But I have a question: It will ship with Android 2.3.7 and not 4.0, but if I'm planning on rooting anyway, I can just upgrade to 4.0 myself, correct? This will be my first smartphone, so I'm extremely excited and incredibly lost.

The Xperia S is really amazing, looks like.

Yeah, you can root it and throw 4.0 on there as soon as a developer gets it working.

oh, I didn't realize there could be compatability problems; I assumed it would be a simple upgrade. Fortunately I've got some time to research this rooting thing so I'm fully prepared once the phone is out.

Do you mean the new version of android or the phone itself? Does each phone require a different "root technique"?

Yes, each model of phone has its own unique root.

depending on what the makers of the phone do you may never see root as well. Its best to wait a week and let the XDA people go nuts with a new phone.

They will tell you if the bootloader is locked down or if they found a way to brute force their way into root. A make or break for me is the locked bootloder. if its locked you can still gain root and root apps will work(most of the time)but wont be putting any custom roms on the phone. well maybe a custom rom but without recovery and im not a far of that...

Thanks for this info, I'll wait a bit then. Hopefully it gets cracked because I don't think I've ever liked a phone as much as this new xperia S.

Not exactly an Android phone but anyone have a Samsung Player 4 or 5 and have any decent ROMs for it?

Isn't that basically a galaxy without the phone?
