I do the same thing. Open a tab, tip once at the end, more money for drinks in the interim.

I do open tab sometimes, never in places that are too crowded though.

Guy I know ended up with a $300 bill b/c the douche behind the bar got the tabs confused lol.

It does definitely save money though.

I don't tip for haircuts, fuck that. I could see tipping if you're getting styled and all that shit and taking up a good 30mins of their time. But all my haircuts take about 5mins at most, not tipping them anything for that amount of time.

I agree with you completely, but that's not the society we live in. I mean in China it was great, I never tipped at all and if I tried to people would wonder what the fuck was wrong with me, lol.

I'd rather be safe than sorry I guess, sure I probably pay a few bucks extra but I worked in retail enough to know how shitty some of those jobs can be without some sort of reward at some point lol.

And at bars I almost always open a tab and tip at the end, because I usually pay with a credit card. If I was just staying for 1 drink then I'd probably pay my bill and tip as soon as my drink arrived, otherwise I'd just give a tip (size of tip depends on hotness of bartender) at the end of the night.

I usually pull out some cash before I go to the bar. keeps my spending in check and makes tipping easy; $1 a drink.

what about takeout though? I think tipping for takeout is bullshit, but some people say you should. if I do, it would never be as much as delivery or sit-down service.

At a takeout/counter place I'd maybe tip 10% max but no more than 5 bucks or so unless I was ordering a lot, also if you go to a buffet place I'd tip like 5 bucks to the guy who clears your plates and brings you drinks.

I usually only tip like half the time at starbucks, usually a quarter or whatever random change I get from my coffee. People that order like 6 drinks for the whole fucking office (all frappucinos, go fuck yourselves) and then don't tip at all need to die in a fire.

You would definitely tip the people that straighten your hair, 15-20% of whatever the cost is the rule of thumb for anything related to beauty/personal appearance.

edit: also if we're getting technical, it's "customary" if you don't like the service to tip 25 cents instead of nothing. This sends the message that you were unhappy with your service, rather than making you look cheap or potentially making the server just wonder whether or not you forgot. You should probably speak with the server/stylist/manager to resolve the issue but yeah

After getting my hair dyed and cut, I'm usually at $87~, so I tip to make it an even 100. Just a haircut, I'd only do a $3-4 tip, regardless if it's a $12 haircut or a $40 haircut.

The place I go to is high demand, first come first serve or sometimes favortism clients. They all do a great job so I don't care who cuts my hair. I always give $5 cause they do a good job. $4 if they sucked that day or didn't attend to me.

I usually pay about $13 and tip about 7 dollars. I try to stay on their good side, don't want to back and get a nice bald patch on the back.

I used to pay $14 for a haircut, and I would tip either $1 or $2.

I don't really need haircuts that often, like once every few months maybe, and I've just started cutting it myself, works pretty well, and saves money!

The one upside of having shitty hair that grows slow and is only slowing down I'm so scared that I might go bald soon and I'm only 20

My understanding for those of us outside of the US:

Waiters and Waitresses make BELOW the minimum wage per hour. If they fail to meet the weekly amount for minimum wage when their tips are calculated then their employer is responsible to comp them the difference.

That is NOT how it works here in Canada. You are guaranteed minimum wage in the service industry (i'm very certain of this, perhaps someone can confirm). Anything above that in tips is a bonus which can increase your wage a LOT.

$13, usually give him a $20 because he takes his time and I've been going to him for years.

See if I went that infrequently I'd tip like that too, but being black you either rock a fro/braids or you go to tbe barber shop every week. When you go that often you cant be shiesty or you pay for that shit with a jacked up head.

For a fade I do $10. When I had a fro and had to get that shit cleaned up every 2 weeks I'd just drop $5. I go to the same barber though so.. I dunno.

Don't think they're responsible for comping the difference. As far as I know there's just, by law, a different minimum wage for waiters and bartenders.

As for my barber, I usually just give him $5 (out of 13, but I'd give him 5 regardless). Bartenders, if I'm paying cash I give at least $1 a drink unless I'm running a tab, which works out because I don't pay cash at the expensive bars. All of you people from outside of the states (especially Oulanbator, jeez) have to realize that it's customary here to give at least a 15% tip, and if you've got something against it and aren't going to contribute anything useful then just stay out of the conversation. I was told what the custom was wherever I went around the world and followed it, I'd expect the same courtesy from a foreigner here.

It varies state to state. Some states require jobs to pay minimum wage. More specifically, Hawaii, but you get that plus tips. In my opinion it is a much better system than making 3 dollars an hour. Also, I believe that waiters are taxed a bit higher and more off sales here. I could be wrong, but I'm quite positive. I think waiters get taxed off of (not taxed 6 or 8%)6 or 8% of their actual sales, not tips. That way it offsets the "under the table" issue because whether you made it or not you are still getting taxed for it.
