    lol

Edit: Sorry for laughing but I lost it when you tried to compare a Communist dictatorship with no checks and balances with our constitutional republic that has strong checks and balances.

Edit: Sorry for laughing but I lost it when you thought our country started out with strong checks and balances just because the constitution said so. What do kids learn in schools these days?

    Borderline Strawman.

I talk about the media of today you talk about a failed newspaper in the early 1700's toss around a few pretty retarded 'facts' and claim victory.

You can't make this shit up.

I have yet to read the rolling stone article but I do like the work that Sebastian Junger did when he was embedded for an extended time with troops.
I read his book "War", also and want to see his movie/documentary "Restreppo". I cannot comprehend what it must be like to have to make decisions like that but it seems like his was tasteful. I am uncertain if he would have done the same thing as the Rolling Stone reporter, or if he did in the book but he got to the point of being treated like a brother among them so it likely effected his perception.

There were points in the book where he had to literally choose between being a reporter or being part of the battle enough to stop being one because of the way it effects the participant vs observer perspectives.

tl/dr After reading the book, it changed my perception of what embedded reporters have to do and deal with. Junger has my respect and it effected my opinion of the reporter who did the Rolling Stone interview.

Good job calling the father of American press and advent of advertising that made Ben Franklin the majority of his fortune a failed newspaper.

This guy is a genius. With the IQ level of god.

Franklin was an Inventor. He invented things ranging from lightning rods to stoves and odometers. He was the postmaster general as well being responsible for printing the first paper money along with Almanacs and other books. He printed in general the newspaper was more of a hobby then anything else.

I don't know why I'm arguing with Steven hawkings here.

on that note off to bed.

One major issue that I don't think has been brought up is the transition from news being a majority of facts to its current state of massive amounts of analysis and "pundits" and a lot less emphasis on straight up news reporting. That is a major problem when the news sources not only tell us what is going on, but how we should interpret it. Sure a little bit of analysis is fine, but it has gotten insanely out of proportion and all we do now is talk about a few hot button issues to death.

Also, while reporting since Nixon has seen the press shed away some of the protection that previously had regarding the President and other high ranking officials, they aren't always pursuing shit that is actually relevant. More often than not it is gossip and shit that just doesn't matter, but will likely sell newspapers/make money and get the public talking about petty shit like Bill getting to second base with some ugly bitch, while not much was said by the media against an unjustifiable war against Iraq. Which one do do we really care about and that cost us/is still costing billions?

Obviously a big, fundamental problem at the root of the above is the education levels of the masses, which is another pillar of any successful democracy (along with the media as previously said). The dumber people are the more they are drawn to...well, stupid shit that doesn't matter but is easy for them to understand. It doesn't help that our increasingly globalized world is becoming more and more complex and confusing every day, thus only exacerbating the problem.

I do think there is some merit to not throwing your sources under the bus, but I don't really buy it entirely as an excuse, and it is not at the root of all of these problems.
