Almost any position that requires you to handle money or monetary transactions will require a credit check. They want to make sure you aren't likely to steal, embezzle and all that stuff.
In the military, part of your security clearance is a credit check. If you have bad credit, they are afraid you might start selling secrets. On the other side of that, if you suddenly get into financial trouble and your credit starts to suck, they can also revoke your security clearance on those grounds alone.
In certain situations, I don't find it too instrusive, but if it's a position that has no interaction with money and shit, stay the hell out of my credit report.
