My father, who was in the Canadian navy for 31 years, told me a story once about visiting an American ship where they were talking about how long they'd been in the navy. The American sailors were all 2-4 years of 6 year contracts, while the Canadian sailors were all in 10+ years. They went agog when my father said 24 years in.

I think that's a major thing in the US? Do a few years in the military to pay for schooling then get the hell out?

Pretty much, ya.

A lot of people get suckered in with promises of $$$ that never come to fruition. It gets a ton of people to enlist, but most of said people don't re-enlist after getting the shaft.

The recruiting here is pretty crazy though too. They'll bug the motherfucking shit out of you. Call your house 5 times a day, stop you on the street. I've been able to get a couple of free lunches out of it before though.

Canadians have done this too. Airborne regiment that got disbanded some years back after the Somalian fiasco? Ask some of those guys how they joined up.

Truth is, Americans were on the isolationist side of things until Pearl Harbor. At that point, we pretty much went postal on warmaking, even though before then the US gov't was doing what it could to support the Allies.

Odds are if the Japanese hadn't attacked us directly, and Germany hadn't decided to go after Russia...Europe would have gone under and the genocide would have been far more successful. Horribly so. And the Middle East would be minus Israel, China would be a buffer state between Japan and Russia (or just plain shredded between them).

We're lucky as hell the Axis powers were dumb enough to yank us headlong into the war. Even back then, the American people were war-tired...it'd only been a generation since WWI, after all.

With Russia to its east and the 'allies' to its west it was always a matter of time before 'axis' were eventually defeated.

Japan is a whole other story.

What we're lucky about is the Germans were foolish enough to fuck with the Russians.
