Truth is, Americans were on the isolationist side of things until Pearl Harbor. At that point, we pretty much went postal on warmaking, even though before then the US gov't was doing what it could to support the Allies.
Odds are if the Japanese hadn't attacked us directly, and Germany hadn't decided to go after Russia...Europe would have gone under and the genocide would have been far more successful. Horribly so. And the Middle East would be minus Israel, China would be a buffer state between Japan and Russia (or just plain shredded between them).
We're lucky as hell the Axis powers were dumb enough to yank us headlong into the war. Even back then, the American people were war-tired...it'd only been a generation since WWI, after all.
