I pretty much expected them to do the cliffhanger thing after what they did with glenn earlier this season. Why? Because it works. It gets people talking and wondering who died (at least the general public who watches this show) and makes them want to watch it when it comes back that much more. I'm sure that the next season premiere will be one of it's highest viewership.

There is a huge difference between the two. Having a cliffhanger of not being sure if one specific person is dead or not is one thing. Having one where you know for sure one person is dead, you just don't know who, is a completely different thing. It seems like a very (mis)calculated move. Season finales are always great jumping-off points, and they probably didn't want to lose viewers by killing off someone's favorite character, so they kept it vague to try and bait the most possible people into coming back. Instead, the 'trick' was so obvious that they just pissed off a large majority of their viewership. Whether that anger will actually lead to drop-off or if people will forget about it after a few months of silence (like most things that outrage people) remains to be seen.

If the show had any balls they'd kill off Rick; he clearly caused the most trouble for Negan and would completely demolish the group.

They're either going to go for the safe bet and follow the comics(and finally end the ridiculous lucky streak) or kill off a minor character.

I've never read the comics and have only very very loosely followed some of the spoilers up to this point; but I still think this could be the greatest episode of the show even if it's a fucking terrible season finale.

So, after reading a bit over the comic I have a new theory for who was killed and why:

Abraham. So in the comic Dwight kills Abraham with an arrow through the eye, which Denise got in the show. In the comic, Denise was killed by Holly (as a zombie) after Negan killed her. Holly in the show was DOA and Denise failed to save her. If Negan kills Abraham it essentially completes the cycle with the same people dying in the same manner but different people per kill.

As well, Abraham's story arc is pretty much where it was from the comic and the past couple seasons have been either outright following the comics or tying things up from the show deviations to where they are in the comic. This also keeps them from having killed Glenn after the Glenngate debacle, so I think it fits. Also, Abraham would totally "take it like a champ", he almost volunteered it looked like.

Kirkman said he wants a strong character for the war, it's more likely to be Glenn, Eugene, or Aaron. If you look at the sequence, he walks by Rick and says "It". The shadow passes Rick's left, which only leaves Sasha, Aaron, Carl, and Eugene as possibles. Then Negan points to his right and says "Anyone moves, take the boy's other eye out and feed it to his father". So it has to be either Sasha or Aaron. The loudest screams were Carl and a female (Maggie, Rosita, or Sasha), so proximity-wise it has to be either Eugene or Aaron. Now, in the event he walked by Rick and they purposely screwed with the lapse of time, it can be anyone to Rick's right, which means it has to be either Daryl, Abe, or Glenn. Abe is safe, Daryl is confirmed to return to finish his story with Dwight, so the likely deaths are Aaron, Eugene, or Glenn. Aaron would be a giant cop-out, so it has to be Glenn or Eugene.

Well, I can certainly see Eugene. And then the fade out is worth it, because honestly wouldn't be tooooo many tears for him, even though he's been improving.
