Car Turning Signal

Wasn't really sure where else to put this, I don't recall seeing a car maintenance thread or anything similar.

Specifically I'm looking to reprogram my car's lighting system to something I saw another car's turn signal behave while I was driving home this morning.

There are three rear red lights on the car, currently the two outmost for whatever direction just blink as is standard. The other car's lights lit up from the center light and progressed outwards, until all 3 were lit, then all went dim and repeated

I'm thinking this would be possible, would it be easy enough to do myself with some cursory (or not so cursory, but nothing too advanced) research into how it would work? Or would I want someone professional to do this sort of modification?

Was it a new mustang?

If your car has three different bulbs in the tail lights it should be pretty easy, just a matter of knowing electronics/wiring or not. If your car doesn't have three bulb tail lights, it gets quite a bit messier.

You'll need to splice in a sequential light controller:

It simply controls where the electricity goes by bulb, rather than to all at the same time...

What's the draw in changing the appearance of a light you're never going to see?

same reason we put rims and grilles and headlights etc into the car. if you're not into cars like that you wouldn't get it.

While I don't like the new Mustangs all that much (mostly engines/interior, although the updated ones are nice), I've seen a few with that sequential turn signal setup and it's pretty cool.

I was cruising home from Montreal when I saw it and immediately wanted to get it, me and the other Mustang kept passing each other then going into same lane and slowing down very gradually, kept us amused for a while at least

Shrug. I can understand body modification, rims, paintjobs, etcetc.. it just seems that a turn signal on the rear is a bit obscure- something you really won't ever see. Customized gold-plated catalytic converter, ahoy.

I'm not trying to knock it by any means, go for it, I understand the fascination with something and the drive to get it done. I'm just a bit amused I guess, lol.
