K so, on my mother's desktop the internal modem connects at normal speeds (21.6-28.8k) and works just fine. However I have a netbook, so no modem, can't install an internal one, so I'm stuck with externals, which have always worked fine.
My external would only connect at 9.6k or lower, very rarely higher, so I figured something was wrong with the modem. Since the other computer was working just fine, that seemed the logical thing...Bought a brand new external modem, and this one also keeps connecting only at 9.6k on both computers.
What should I do at this point? Do internal modems just work better? I know the line quality form our house to the phone company is shit, so thats why we dont' get great speeds. External modems USED to work fine. Why are they being shit now? Should I just buy different modems and try them till one works correctly with our line conditions?
If one modem works, and another brand new one wont, is that good enough evidence to get the damned phone company to actually do something?
Pulling my hair out atm.
