Maybe I'm missing something but aren't all i5s dual cores that are in laptops? Arrandales, iirc. Would need to be able to put up 6.4 GHz to keep up with a core i7 720QM... And that's with hyperthreading disabled.

The g73 is still the best gaming laptop on the market right now (for its price) I believe. Please ignore Dj's post if you care at all for gaming on the laptop.

I run BF2142 on really high settings, wow high, metro2033 high, gta4 high... it handles everything I throw at it. It's a monster.

Picked up one of the G73s yesterday and I got some 1333 RAM in it. Does not look to have a Momentus XT in it so I guess Bestbuy might have just upped the RAM in it. <3 this thing.

Wow, that dj guy really doesn't know the product he sells. The 720QM's stock speed is 1.6ghz, but under load, it'll automatically overclock to 2.8ghz; the 430M starts off at 2.26ghz, but will overclock to 2.53ghz. So... with faster clock speed, more cores (and more threads), the i7 wins all over the place compared to the i5.

I set mine up so that it doesn't idle down or get throttled, mine also had 1333ram in it and I added an 8th gb. Shits a monster.

Ok since I'm on it now, I can answer lol.

By throttling and idling I mean the sleep/idle feature that come with these processors to bog them down when not on load. You typically can disable it in bios but programs like throttlestop will work since you cant access those parts of the bios on these laptops. The reason these are good is because sometimes when you are running 3D applications and are putting a load on the cpu, it will stay idled. I'm not sure why. Very often I would catch it at 400-900mhz while playing full screen games... really annoying.

Currently I have it to run at full speed+turbo whenever plugged in, so usually thats around 3000mhz x20ish. According to coretemp I'm at around 40-50c idle. I will play some metro2033 later or some fallout/bf2142 and check my temps again when I get the chance. Work is a little busy at the moment, so it's gotta wait a few.

Do you let it just run from the normal 90 W power supply? I got on FFXIV today and nothing was wrong with it until it wanted to load characters/models/buildings etc. It would freeze up for several seconds depending on how big the model was. I have no idea what's happening and would prefer not to use a program such as ThrottleStop unless it's ultimately deemed safe...

What's happening is exactly what I told you would happen and why I said to use throttlestop. All it does is disable the idle that bogs down your computer. Get cpuid and watch as you enter a game and are running at 400mhz when you bought an i7 and ask yourself why. The laptop is not going to overheat, it's not a strain on the psu, it's what its made to run at. Make sure turbo mode is also on, ser up your power4gear to have cpu/gpu etc at 100% when plugged in, and have fun. You don't need to change any settings in throttlestop either if I remember right. Just open the program and enjoy.

Like I said, I run metro2033, BF2142, Fallout3, Wow, all at highest possible settings if not damn near highest possible. Everything runs great. And ff14 shouldn't be nearly as much of a hog as some of those can be.

edit: they may have fixed the throttling problem in the 209 bios but not sure.

Well I found most of the problem, FFXIV beta is having stuttering problems with ATI cards so once that gets fixed I should be gravy.

Edit: Running 209 and I have no problems with Aliens vs Predators on full specs. Think it's just the stuttering problem when loading models in FFXIV.

Are you running cpuid to see what your cpu is clocking at?

CPU-Z shows my frequency for my RAM to be 667 Mhz. And in FFXI all it is going up to is 650. Intel core i7 is running about 2.1 - 2.5 x 16-19. RAM seems that it's throttled?

You seem to be fine. The problem I was having with mine was that even when plugged in, and with the power settings to be @100% gpu/cpu, the cpu would still downclock randomly. Sometimes during web browsing, sometimes when on load. There was a problem mentioned around somewhere that it was due to starting on batterypower than plugging it in, but it seemed to happen all the time for me. Then again, I might have old bios. I rather it not idle either.

Figured so. Like I said I think it's just the stuttering problem they're having with FFXIV cause everything else runs fine.

Oh and also, thanks. I'm pretty new to the high end computing scene so I'm trying to learn/understand everything I can. I'm going to be a computer engineer so I've been reading up on all sorts of stuff.
