I think the general idea is that returning to a Islamic state with a child out of wedlock would result in being bludgeoned by heavy rocks and shit, thus a reason for disposing of the child is established. Seems more likely than other reasons (avoid responsibility or accident, which may be the case, I'm too tired to remember what the facts are.) That's just the scenario that comes to my mind when people associate Islam with it.

It's not exactly the same as the Scientology example because when ppl think of Scientology they usually associate the US as one of the largest populations, but India's ~160 million muslims is a larger Muslim population than most if not all of of the Arabic Middle East.
