CPU Temperature and OC

So, I just mounted a Noctua NH-U12P SE2 air cooler, since my stock cooler got messed up and i was getting temps as high as 65C+ idle and 90-95C while playing Bioshock.

My temps are still relatively high if I'm not wrong, 40C Overall, 50 on Core 1, 43 on cores 2 and 3, 40 on core 4 while idle and this on load:

I don't know if its a good idea to OC whit these temps, but I really don't know, I don't want to do any mad OC, just OC a Q9450 2,66Ghz to 3.2-3.4

Also, I've never done any OC before, I tried looking around google but I've yet to find anything reliable as I'm seeing way too many different things, from people saying you can OC it to 3.6 just upping the FSB and leaving everything else on auto to people changing a bunch of settings so I have no idea what to do, any tip or a site with reliable info would be good D:

You cant just pop a cooler on and go OCing, have to let the paste set. Preferably cycle its usage over a few days.

Those temperatures are fine. You can do a moderate overclock, just stop when you get into the 70 degree range under full load.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but I didn't want to start a new one in the same vein.

My CPU temps were just now hitting 96-99C constant and all I had just done was run the windows rating thing. I just checked to make sure my CPU fan was plugged in and everything looked good. Even made sure it was still mounted firmly.

After starting up again, my temps are 42 40 41 and 39 on both RealTemp and Speedfan. I did set the CPU fan to full speed in the BIOS, but I don't want that to be the permanent solution. This is also the first time I noticed that they were actually running hot like that.

Is there anything I can do to keep that from happening again? If there's after market cooling that will make a huge difference I might be interested in that, as long as it isn't super expensive. Right now it's stock cooling and no OC (running at 2.67, i5).

Either something is wrong with your chip, motherboard, or the heatsink isnt seated properly.

@OP, those temps look fine. You could probably squeeze out a couple hundred more MHz and remain at the same idle/load temps as long as you arent raising your vcore that much.

As for the thermal compound thing, not all TIM requires a set time. Arctic Silver 5 is one of the ones that needs a curing time, but stuff like IC7 Diamond does not.

Well, tried to mess a bit with bios settings and got it to 3.2, fairly stable and 60-63C over all cores while on 100% load, been 2 hours and good so far, I will settle for this for now, tried to get it to 3.4Ghz for i get BSOD'd after few mins running a test, guess it's just a matter of tweaking vcore and such, I'm at stock values atm.

Yeah, prime95 load under about 75C on dual cores and 70C on quads for Intel chips is totally fine.

And as far as voltage goes, you can safely increase it up to about 10% with no noteworthy long-term impact (the chip life will be shortened somewhat, but still most likely longer than its projected useful life, especially in the hands of an overclocker).

Also, small voltage increases will not yield a huge spike in temperature. You'll see a fairly small change for the first 5% or so increase, in my experience, but the higher you go, the more temperatures will ramp up.

Just as a point of reference for you, my old Q6600 is currently running at 3.4GHz (stock is 2.4GHz), vCore bumped from 1.375 to 1.500 in BIOS, with vDroop anywhere between 1.44 and 1.424, and temps are around 30C at idle, high 30s to mid 40s under normal gaming load, and as high as the low 60s under stress test load.

This seems weird to me I thought my temps were high on my Q6600(3.2Oced) at 38C idle with a Zalman fan now im not so concerned.

Sorry to hijack this thread but if I'm planning to buy an AMD 6 cores, would the case be important (for more air space)? I heard about it being a hotter than i7.

Case isn't as important as airflow, although they're related. If you have a great case, but your cables block everything, then it's notsogreat, keep both in mind. I probably wouldn't go for a microatx case though.

and yeah, ~40C is perfectly fine
