You guys don't understand the root of the problem here: Twitter's arbitrary character limit. If the editor wasn't working with such a limited number of characters in her tweet, she would have been able to appropriately explain the reasoning behind the tweet. This would have diffused most of the rage that has ensued, and would have kept her job safe. Therefore, Twitter is the root of the problem.

If the reporter didn't have enough space to clearly convey what she meant to say, why did she use Twitter as a medium in the first place?

That being said, it was still silly to fire her.
Many US journalists over the past few decades have said great things about people who make the grand ayatollah look a fucking saint, and (almost) none of them got shitcanned.

Editor's update: Here is David Ignatius in the Washington Post showing respect for Fadlallah in 2002 (h/t Sean Lee):

“I came away with sincere respect for Fadlallah's intellect and passion; he is one of the few Muslim clerics who recognize that there is an urgent need for Islam to find a better accommodation with the West. And he has a nimble mind, which is evident in the curious eyes and the arched eyebrows that seem to reach almost to his black turban as he listens to questions."
    From Mondoweiss.

another great example of why I have a journalism degree but have not chosen to go into the field.

I can't even finish reading the shit Kuya posted, it made me want to alternately vomit and curl up into the fetal position.

    fuck cnn.

What do you do instead, then.

I share your degree, and am interested to see what path you've chosen.

Interesting how our country works. Wait a presidency or two, and suddenly everyone forgets what they said.

This is kind of like how Muhammed was okay to show on South Park before some dipshit drew a bad picture, now suddenly it's not okay ever and people rage.

Her job is her opinion. News hasn't been about fact for a long time, if ever. This is evidenced by the firing. She got off message, therefore failed at her job and was fired.

I work for a bank. totally unrelated but I'm not making a career of it. right now I'm looking at career options in videogaming that use my experience, whether it's stuff like PR that uses the journalism degree, or stuff like payroll that uses my bank experience. I figure once I get my foot in the door at Nintendo of America or whatever, a lot more options will present themselves.

I've also been meaning to do some freelance work on the side for the longest time, I would never rely on that but it's a nice way to substitute your income. I've been too lazy to write anything yet though hahaha

it just sucks because I thought of journalism as a noble profession that would be worth it despite the low pay scale. and it really isn't. there are very few news outlets anymore that place freedom of information above corporate security.

    It's more like Twitter's existence.

It was a fucking tweet, not a televised national news broadcast. And furthermore, she explained what she meant but was still fired. She got fired as some knee-jerk reaction to a higher up not wanting to deal with a little PR from what it sounds like.
