    Switching from Lexapro to Citalopram

So about a month ago I went to the doctor for anxiety problems and he gave me a month trial of Lexapro. I'm on my 4th week of taking it and I think it's definetly helped alot. The problem is I don't have great insurance and Lexapro is out of my budget. After going back he prescribed me Citalopram. I'm basically just scared if Citalopram will work or if there will be side effects again. If anyone can post their experiences or helpful information I'd apperciate it

You should talk to the doctor about your fears, not BG.

Every time i have switched meds there were side effects. Usually killer headaches for the first 2 weeks. I've taken alot of them to, i think 9 different combos? Currently on Lexapro+Trazadone+Abilify.(Traz is mostly for sleeping) I have never heard of Citalopram but since it is also an SSRI I would think it would have similar side effects that Lexapro originally had. Although from what i read Lexapro is more anxiety and Citalopram is more for depression so i dont know how that difference will matter.

The main thing is you have to stick with it, that is the only way to get better.

They are almost exactly the same medication (Lexapro is escitalopram, and their chemical structures are about as different as their names are). Lexapro is reputed to have slightly fewer side effects and to work as much as a week faster, but if one works for you the other almost certainly will.

Lexapro is absolute shit anyways, when I went off that med it gave me strange heart rhythms, vertigo and nervous twitches for a good few months.

In theory, you shouldn't have very big problems switching from one to another. Lexapro (escitalopram) is second generation citalopram (Celexa). They are very similar chemically and both have pretty much the same side effects etc. Just make sure you talk to your doctor about if you need to titrate down from the lexapro and up on the citalopram. Hope this helps.

Celexa killed my sex drive entirely (I'm female) and I also had the worst withdrawal after I came off of it. I was sick for about two weeks and it didn't occur to me that it was withdrawal from the medication till about halfway through being sick. I couldn't eat, I could barely drink or sleep. I spent almost the entire time bedridden, anything I ate or drank came up. Had a terrible headache the whole time too.

My ex and my former roommate were worried about me because I could barely get up to go to the bathroom, and my ex had to help me take a shower. Was close to going to the hospital, and never in my life have I experienced that before. Went away within a day or two of starting on a new medication.

Not trying to troll you or anything, but when you stopped taking it did you stop cold turkey or were you titrated down?

I was weaned off from 60mg. After taking it for around 6 months, it had effected most of my behavior except my anxiety or depression. Both Lexapro and Prozac have treated me well with little to no side effects. Lexapro had the least for me, and helped my depression the most. Prozac has been the opposite, helped my anxiety but not my depression, so I'm stuck in a loop.
