    Shampoo Suggestions?

    Heyo BG,

I've been using Head and Shoulders for about half a year now and it has helped some with the whole dandruff thing it's designed for, but I still get a little bit of buildup and some dandruff. I'm fed up with it and planning on switching shampoos once I finish this bottle. Do any of you have any suggestions for a good anti-dandruff/build-up shampoo? I'd prefer to not go the prescription route if possible.

    Thanks in advance.

Try Nizoral, an over-the-counter shampoo that uses the same formula as the prescription but only half of the strength. You can get it pretty much from any rite-aid or retail pharmacy.

Edit, It was recommended by a dermatologist

If you use hair gel/pomade 2-3 times a week or swim fairly often you might want to consider using a clarifying shampoo once a week to clear the gunk out of your hair.

You should also invest in a good conditioner (something with tea tree oil, doesn't have to be expensive) and use that at least once a week, but you can use it every day if you want.

The problem with a lot of commercial shampoos (including head & shoulders) is that they tend to be overly harsh so they can actually make your dandruff worse by drying out your scalp. Most of them (Pantene especially) are so loaded with wax that they're pretty bad for buildup as well.

I really like most of Paul Mitchell's hair stuff (shampoo, Re-works/Wax Works/Dry Wax for styling) but it can be kinda tough to find on sale.

My hair is always insanely dry after I wash it with shampo and condition it. Any recommendations?

what kind of conditioner/shampoo do you use? Does your scalp get itchy in winter? Do you normally have dry hair?

If your scalp is still dry after you shampoo and condition then chances are your shampoo is too harsh for your hair/scalp type. Switch to something milder, or let the conditioner sit on your scalp while you wash other things.

I know the bottle says rinse -> lather -> repeat but generally you don't need a 2nd shampooing, by the way. The first shampooing removes something like 90-95% of the accumulated dirt and oil in your hair, the 2nd shampooing is something added by shampoo manufacturers to make you use more shampoo, which is an easy sell for consumers because a second shampooing makes a much thicker lather. You don't really need it especially if you're using a harsh shampoo.

Also, the water being too hot can be bad for your hair (and your skin). Hotter water tends to leech more of the natural oils out of your hair and skin and can lead to overdrying. People seem to think that the hotter the water, the cleaner they get, when this can actually cause increased skin irritation and dryness. If the steam from your shower makes the fire alarm go off when you open the door, you should consider turning it down a little.

also this is the stuff I use. I have a naturally dry scalp which gets very itchy in the winter, but this stuff is fantastic. With most conditioners I can only do it once a week or it makes my skin break out, but I can use this stuff every day:

    I use this: http://www.calbenpuresoap.com/shampoo.htm
It works fairly well to combat my dandruff and itchy scalp. Use it every other day or so. One bottle literally lasts half a year because the stuff is so concentrated. Use too much though and hair will be too dry. It took a while to find the right amount to use for me, there isn't even a need to use conditioner with this stuff.

Edit: I mean the small bottle from the sample pack they have. The jug in the picture linked will easily last over a year.

I have heard people say "shampoo and conditioner aren't meant to be mixed" as in a 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner. Any truth to this?

yes, buy a shampoo and buy a conditioner. Shampoo should be quickly worked through your hair and rinsed out, whereas conditioner can be left in the entire time you shower to let it soak into the hair/scalp. Leaving 2-in-1 in your hair for the length of your shower seems like it'd totally dry the shit out of your hair, and rinsing it out quickly would wash the conditioner out before it has a chance to work.

I'm guessing if you're a girl with a lot of hair (assuming they don't have oily or dry hair) that wants to condition while they shampoo since it takes a long time it'd probably be a good, but for guys it's probably worth it to just buy one of each. IMO it's more important to have a good conditioner than a good shampoo, so if you're going to spend more money on one of the two make it the conditioner.

also when I think of 2 in 1 shampoo I think of Pantene and like.. that neon green Pert Plus, both of which are horrible for your hair in terms of waxy buildup.

It doesn't have to take you a long time at all. I usually just shampoo my hair quick first thing, then immediately put in conditioner. Then while it's sitting in my hair I finish my shower, and rinse it out when I'm done. Hell if you jerk off in the shower you can condition before you do that, and then rinse it out after.

Keep in mind when a girl has to wash her long hair it can take upwards of an hour, so consider yourself lucky lol

    Giving real hair advice yall-

You don't really "need" conditioner if you have short hair. All it would do for you is give you the soft feeling you get towards the end of the day/morning after earlier, it doesnt do anything for the health of your hair because your hair is so short that the oil gets to where it needs to be in a timely fashion. It's different with you have long (back length) hair, because you can shampoo daily and the oil will never make its way down to the length of the hair (in any easy way, naps make your hair nicer as does brushing after the oil starts to come out after you shower, but unnecessary brushing is bad if you're trying to have long beautiful hair.)

Really, anyone with long hair should only be washing their scalp, and rinsing off the rest. The shampoo that comes down while rinsing is enough to "clean" the hair further from the scalp, which isnt really dirty and is more prone to being dry, hence the use of conditioner. Conditioner is there to give that hair the oil it wont get through the course of the day because it's so far from the scalp. You don't add conditioner to your scalp because it gets oily enough through the day, which is also the reason people with short hair don't need to condition, because you can fuck your hair up all you want and you'll just cut it off if you maintain a short hairstyle. Conditioner is a waste if you have short hair.

And no Atre is crazy, it doesnt take an hour to wash your hair if it's long. My hair is down to the small of my back and it doesnt take me even 25mins to shower, and I dawdle like nobody's business. Shampoo the scalp and sides, flip all your hair over (looking at my knees occurs daily :D) and get the back. Flip it all back over and either rinse, or if you have dandruff (I've had it since I was in elementary school, shit changes with the seasons) leave it in and clean the rest of your body. Then condition the length of your hair, and you can do that over your shoulder. WTF is this 1hr shit lol

That Tea Tree stuff smells like ass. I use TRESemee. It works really well and it has a decent smell to it.

Abba, not grocery-crap brands. Might as well wash your hair with Dawn if you think any of them are good.

that's complete nonsense. i've had long hair (down to mid-back at its longest) for ~12 years, i'm in and out of the shower in 10 minutes and i use a separate conditioner. towel dry that shit for a few minutes, shave, get dressed, 15, maaaybe 20 minutes max for the whole ordeal.

bitches just lack the drive for efficiency is all.

nirokun pretty much nailed it. don't even bother with conditioner if you can't run a brush through your hair.

I guess most of the girls I know do things in the shower besides washing their hair lol

And conditioner is just fine to use for short hair, especially if your scalp is dry or your hair gets really dry/damaged. I use way too much gel to get away with not conditioning.

If I don't condition, the following happens: hair and especially scalp get too dry after washing, before my scalp has a chance to replenish the natural oils. It also fluffs and sticks straight out like a white guy fro, lol. It then overproduces oil to compensate, leading to greasy feeling/looking hair, and even skin breakouts if my hair is long enough. For people with short hair the purpose of conditioning is more for your scalp yeah, but if it's humid enough sometimes conditioner can give my hair enough body/weight that I don't even need pomade at all.

In terms of washing, I try to wash it every day. There are times where I don't have time so I don't shampoo in the shower, just wash off. I don't use styling products and I don't swim all that often. I do live in FL so the humidity is a bitch, but it doesn't seem to bother my hair that much. What does the Paul Mitchell stuff usually run when it's not on sale? If it's expensive, any recommendations for a cheaper alternative?
