i know the huge bottles of clairfying shampoo usually cost 11 or 12 in a salon, but 8 or 9 at discount beauty supply stores like Harmon. The conditioner I'm not so sure, probably close to 10 bucks, but you don't need a lot so it'll last you a very long time.

Shampoong your hair daily is bad, you should aim for 2-3x a week. Especially with longer hair, it can be very damaging. Shampooing daily will strip your hair of its natural oils. Atreides has given some great advice. Getting a good conditioner for your scalp should be a priority. Paul Mitchell is a good line, I would also check out Scalp Benefits by Aveda. A clarifying shampoo is also a helpful suggestion if you use products to get rid of build up.

There's a ton of things claiming to do this, but it's really all bullshit. You won't change curly hair to behave straight with products. That said, the Matrix smoothing line isn't bad, and Fekkai has some nice stuff in their line for ironing/shining.

I usually only leave the shampoo in for around 30 seconds, I don't let it sit in long at all, and I do leave conditioner in for most of the time I'm in the shower so I dunno what I'm doing wrong. I just use whatever shampoo/conditioner is around, I'm not sure if it's harsh or not. I'll try using whatever you use and see how it works out then.

One word: Goldwell. It's $30 a bottle, not going to lie. But it's one of the best shampoos you can use.

It's not scented in any way, and it's all natural ingredients. My hair health is phenomenal because of it. I won't ever buy anything but Goldwell ever again.

You don't really "need" conditioner if you have short hair. All it would do for you is give you the soft feeling you get towards the end of the day/morning after earlier, it doesnt do anything for the health of your hair because your hair is so short that the oil gets to where it needs to be in a timely fashion. It's different with you have long (back length) hair, because you can shampoo daily and the oil will never make its way down to the length of the hair (in any easy way, naps make your hair nicer as does brushing after the oil starts to come out after you shower, but unnecessary brushing is bad if you're trying to have long beautiful hair.)

Really, anyone with long hair should only be washing their scalp, and rinsing off the rest. The shampoo that comes down while rinsing is enough to "clean" the hair further from the scalp, which isnt really dirty and is more prone to being dry, hence the use of conditioner. Conditioner is there to give that hair the oil it wont get through the course of the day because it's so far from the scalp. You don't add conditioner to your scalp because it gets oily enough through the day, which is also the reason people with short hair don't need to condition, because you can fuck your hair up all you want and you'll just cut it off if you maintain a short hairstyle. Conditioner is a waste if you have short hair.

And no Atre is crazy, it doesnt take an hour to wash your hair if it's long. My hair is down to the small of my back and it doesnt take me even 25mins to shower, and I dawdle like nobody's business. Shampoo the scalp and sides, flip all your hair over (looking at my knees occurs daily :D) and get the back. Flip it all back over and either rinse, or if you have dandruff (I've had it since I was in elementary school, shit changes with the seasons) leave it in and clean the rest of your body. Then condition the length of your hair, and you can do that over your shoulder. WTF is this 1hr shit lol
Yo, I remember you mentioning what you said was the "best" stuff for hair loss, but I cant remember where or what you said. What was it lol, only one I hear about is nioxin.

And this thread was quite enlightening, I had no idea about any of this shit.

Propecia is the best iirc, targets the crown area, and requires a prescription. Minoxidil (Rogaine) is OTC and mainly targets a receding hairline. My coworker told me about nioxin, which she used, and said it worked for her, but I'm wary about it. I'm pretty sure my hair loss is male pattern baldness, which is a hormonal thing, and I have plans to go hormone replacement therapy and take antiandrogens and estrogen. I realize this really won't work for most other people, as the though of appearing less masculine/more feminine is not at all worth the cost of losing hair. Your gender identity may vary

Sorry for the necro bump, but I have another question and thought it would be better than starting another thread.

I switched to the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner and I was just curious as to how often I should be using each of them. I've heard people say shampoo every day and conditioner every day, as well as other people saying Shampoo every day and conditioner once a week. I was just curious as to what BG thought the best method to this madness was.

EDIT: Thanks tons to Atreides for suggesting the Paul Mitchell stuff, it's been doing wonders for the dandruff and buildup.

I use tea tree as well, use both once a day or every other day. Don't over wash.

Use a clarifying shampoo once a week also.

Off and on for a bit over a decade I've used gels, palmades, waxes, glue, carpenter's glue, whatever for different hairstyles I've had, but the frequent change in hair color (bleach -> color -> wait 2 weeks -> re-bleach -> re-color) kept my head pretty free and clear of build-up when using the more serious products when I was younger.

Past few years with just low-key mohawks or just hairstyles that required a daily application of wax but no color changes except for the occasional bleach and recolor down to a light brown has made build-up a huge problem even using head and shoulders 3-4 times a week.

Clarifying shampoo will fix it right up. You need to use it sparingly (follow the instructions) but it leaves your hair with that "just had my hair bleached then shampooed it and now it feels fucking light and wonderful" feeling without the harsh effects of bleaching your hair. It'll take care of even the worst scalp build-up and make whatever shampoo you use normally thousands of times more effective and make your hair lighter and more easily stylable.

If you are any race besides asian (fucking would kill to have asian hair, I have thick-as-shit portuguese hair) and you use product in your hair daily, you should look into a clarifying shampoo. Under $15 from CVS or etc and you use it once a week. 1 bottle should last you 6-10 months.
