You don't "need" a full suit really you just need to have proper fitting gear which a lot of people don't have or don't want to wear. There are companies like Draggin' Jeans, http://www.dragginjeans.com/ProductI...uctid=JEANS_05, that offer practical heavy denim jeans that have Kevlar padding in the knees and rear end. The most important thing about gear is having gear that fits. Helmet, gloves, boots, jeans. Most people don't ride with really heavy jeans because they are hot and uncomfortable, but you have to make some compromises. Motorcyclesuperstore.com also has good prices on good gear.

"Motorcycle rider found dead after flying off of a bridge at 210 mph. He only had his license for 2 hours." I'd go out like that.

I've gone 160 before and that's a guess, anything over 140 and i'm scared to look down at the speedometer even for a 1\2 second.

have you decided on a bike yet?

135(speedo readout it was actually less due to intentional changes in the meter) was the fastest I ever went on my 500R. shit was scary even on an empty 3 lane interstate straightaway.

Look up a motorcycle safety course in your area. They start you out with small bikes and teach you the basics of riding. It should also get you a discount on your insurance too. And as I'm sure everyone has said, don't start with a 250. I worked with a guy last summer, he got a 250 and I got a 600. He sold his 2 weeks later 'cause he was jealous lol.

Also, go used. Most motorcycle people take good care of their bikes and I doubt the engine will wear out on something small like a motorcycle.

250s get ridden pretty hard, that's the only exception to that I think. Most bikes get taken pretty good care of since no one really rides all year round unless they are in a sunny state. Though you should always take someone who knows bikes very well when you go to check out a used bike.

It does and a lot faster mileage wise than a car. touring bikes are the exception.

Indeed. The mechanical tolerances that motorcycles operate on are much tighter than cars. People who are lazy about routine maintenance can end up killing their bikes pretty fast.

Probably should get disability and life insurance just in case. A friend of mine learned it the hard way.

It's amazing that 100~150mph looks sluggish after 240...

It looks like 50mph~140mph was entirely a goddamn wheelie.

Yeah that's normal. Bikes have so much power that sometimes you'll be on one tire more than 2 depending on how you drive. My brother went from a zx10 to a busa and then back to a zx10, it's actually hard to keep the front tire down at times. (He only went back to a zx10 when a friend spilled his busa)

As for the OP, no reason for you to not get a 600. Thats the only bike you'll need for a long time. Depending on what type of riding you do, distance, the area, then you can consider a 750 or larger. You posted at least one kawasaki, so just pick up a zx6. 600's are perfect first bikes, no need to waste your money on a shitty 250, you're just going to get laughed at anyway on those unless you take off all the plastic and use them for throw away trick bikes.

I usually only top out at 120 on the way to work on my bike. There is a traffic light on a curve that forces me to slow down. Nice wide smooth road to do it on as well. Bikes are a lot of fun, problem is if someone pulls out and cuts you off and you collide somehow, it won't matter if you are doing 45mph or 145mph. You are doing the paramedics and firemen a favor if you are going 145 though, so you should do that lol... it's less work for us and it's always interesting to see shoes leave the feet.

Just be aware of your surroundings, most accidents are caused by other drivers not seeing the bike and just pulling out. Keep headlights/highbeams on at all times, even during the day.

Just make sure you check the clutch and rear brake, lot of people try to hide flaws in those areas. Safety course is great, some of them provide bikes for you to use as well (typically 250s-500s)... It's quite hard making some of the turns in the course with a crotch rocket, and you probably will spill the bike on the course a few times.

Get something comfortable... I taught myself how to ride on my brand spankin' new R6 a few years ago. I took the riding class about 2-3 months after I had already been riding on the road and what not. But you should do it right, take the class then go after the bike .

Get something that doesn't require you to be leaning forward every second that you're riding it. Something in the 500-660 range if you're getting a super sport is more than enough. Get something in the 800-1000 range if you're more into the cruiser type bikes.
