Can you play FFXI tethered...

Just curious. If it's possible, might try it with a jailbroken iphone 4 if I buy one.

Also, anyone know the monthly bandwidth requirements for FFXI, assuming a few hours a day of play? And if FFXIV will be similar (is it also "designed" for 56k?)

Depends on your carrier I guess, most of them have 200-300 ms ping, which should be "ok" since that's what 56k gets about and FFXI plays decently on it.

As for the bandwith usage, we're talking roughly 18mb per hour (and I'm being very generous) so do the math from there.

Usage might be forbidden by carrier and they'll be able to see the ports used (assuming they're not locked to start with.), unless you know stuff about VPN and hiding traffic. (which I don't.)

I doubt it for FFXIV.

Yeah, it all depends. But more than likely no. You'd lag like a bitch. When I tether from my droid it takes a while to load anything

A friend I know played tethered for a bit, and the lag was worse then normal but still playable. Just don't do any time sensitive things in the game and you'll be fine.

I use to play tethered to my verizon VX6700, and there was a noticable difference to the lag compared to a standard wifi connection.

However, it was still playable and I went off and enjoyed majority of my HNM events. I never attempted dynamis though.

Yes you can. Do it all the time. You might lag out from time to time.

My droid it works fine on. Like I said you might see things happen a little delayed but that is it. Try it out depending how good it is there you should be fine.

I did it on my 3g before. Playable yes, depending on what you are doing. Crap like dynamis/besieged, you will hate yourself. Farming/merit party, etc, not a problem really.

iv done it. Only time it really sucked was trying to do smn burns in the tunnel. All the mobs around would fuck me over. 3g ATT

I've done it on my iPhone over edge and 3g and my old LG VX8300 which used DUN

Both have much higher latencies compared to a broadband connection but it was perfectly playable, although slightly laggy but it wasn't like terrible or unplayable by any means
