Thus 250 evasion skill = +485 eva or something like that.

Im not sure if it was 200 or 150 being the soft cap, and it might dip again after that but nowhere have I ever read before that 1 eva skill = 1 eva

I've heard 500 different theories thrown around over the years, and never once heard that.

Its the one I've heard most commonly, in fact I believe I asked this exact question months ago in an older random question thread.

Someone told me this and no one said otherwise so thats what I went with.

Just bought a new laptop, do I have to buy a new copy of FFXI again to install it on that to use existing characters or can I just use the same copy I installed on my desktop?

Can just install the same copy/etc.

FFXI registration codes serve to add content to a Playonline account, the software itself doesn't have any sort of serial/copy protection.

Is where you went wrong. You wouldn't even be able to 'eyeball' such a small amount of difference, if Evasion Skill really did give more evasion.

Besides, if 1 Evasion Skill = 2 Evasion, we would need far more accuracy to cap on mobs and would evade a lot more on non-evasive jobs.

As Massimo points out, we have pretty well known accuracy equations that would start hitting some funny business if it were as extreme as a 1:2 relationship. At worst I wouldn't think evasion skill was below a 0.9:1 using the skill:accuracy rules, but that would be as low as I would expect it to vary if it weren't a 1:1 relationship.

Remember of course that you need to halve everything when you start talking about rates, so Urat might be thinking of 2 evasion being 1% evade rate just like 2 accuracy is 1% hit rate.

So 1% evade rate : 2 evasion skill : 2 evasion : 4 agility would be a more beneficial comparison.

    Quick question about Abyssea;

How do you guys generally form your alliances? LS onry? Pick up group from shouts in WG? Or do you just turn up in the zone and hope to get lucky?

I guess most peoples response will be LS, problem is I cant find a EU LS (or a LS that goes at times I can make) that does abyssea on my server so i'm feeling like i'm missng out!

Can't be assed to dig for the post but at least a few WS don't. Dasva over on FFXIAH posted a parse of a low-level dagger WS that very definitely did not have an acc boost when tested with blind pots. That parse did imply a potential acc penalty though, as I believe WS accuracy was significantly lower than his TP accuracy.

Whether any of the WS that actually matter don't get a boost is another story.

So, I have two unmeritted 75 jobs that I'm starting to look at meritting just so I can use up merits that I'll get helping people in Abyssea. Those jobs are Ranger and Summoner.

What I'm proposing for Ranger merits:
    5 Rapid Shot
    5 Unlimited Shot Recast
    5 Flashy Shot
    5 Snapshot

What I'm proposing for Summoner merits:
    5 PAT (or P/MAcc?)
    5 MAB
    5 Geocrush
    5 Wind Blade

My Summoner will never have skill merits and may never get Relic gloves. Should I go with Physical Attack, Physical Accuracy, or just go with Magical Accuracy? I'm a fan of a Stun BP, and I'm a fan of Garuda due to the the Perp- hat. I'm not a hardcore summoner, as you can probably see, and I doubt I'll ever get the Shiva shoes.

Abyssea XPing is easy enough that any 18 idiots can easily do it, so joining a random whitegate shout is safe. If you're doing it with an LS you don't need a whole alliance, one DD party is plenty, then your mages/pullers/chest openers in a second party.

ask my LS first and decent players on FL, then shout to fill the rest of it.

be sure to /check DD's gear specifically before you accept them, and make sure mages are aware they must play to a meripo standard or be booted. and BLMs that are ok with curing Dd's who're hasso'ing if your setup is (ddx3/cor/brd/whm) x2, as it can be easily using the large shout responses you will probably get.

Disagree entirely. I've tried 3 different shout groups now, and every single 1 has timed out and been an utter waste of time. Pretty sure I'm done wasting my time in shout groups.

Full shout groups are still likely to fail, yeah. However it is relatively "safe" if you join a group from someone somewhat reputable on your server who is just looking to fill up the places.

While I haven't led any shout groups myself, I've gone with Chen on almost (maybe all?) of his, and we only had problems with the first one or two, and that was because we still didn't fully understand how Lights worked. Being fussy over how people play and gear is important, as is making sure everyone knows what is expected of them, including that they buy several keys and stat boosts. I imagine most leaders are happy to just take anyone and are poor at explaining what is needed and coordinating people once inside. I've spoke to a few people who joined /shout runs where the leader just seemed happy to take anyone and be very lazy with the actual leading part of the run, and as such results were poor, but with a good leader there's no reason it can't be a success.

I usually see what I have in LS available, then use that as the structure and form my own groups. I dont trust stupid people enough to join shout groups and my time in abyssea in valuable so I dont want to waste it.

Only way I'd join a shout group is if it was already going for a few hours and I knew the leaders.

I just naturally assume everyone else is an idiot and hope that a proud few prove me wrong.

Weird, I was just in an incredibly bad random shout alliance last night to leech mandy kills for my dagger trial. I left after 6 and a half hours and they were still going just fine. This was a full alliance of 18 with ZERO bards, mages randomly mixed with DDs, and the dnc (me) tossed into the puller party. I ended up parsing to find the only good DD there, and jumped party so I could heal/samba him and let him full time hasso. I was getting in 3 or 4 steps per mob they were going so slow. Still never came close to timing out, and left with more time than I started with.

You can make Abyssea alliances that are much more efficient than shout parties. However, even a shout party will get you better xp/hour than the best birds party if they get Blue chests/TEs and you can stay for at least 3 hours.

    Basic strategy should be:
    Party 1: Merit Party
    Party 2: Merit Party
Party 3: BLM/SCHs and Chest openers, do not include an AoE buffer (COR, BRD) as it interrupts chest opening, but a Summoner with Diabolos's favor works for Refresh.

Have the melee really try to avoid WS kills (you want 1-2 max out of the first 50 kills) but not turn away from the monster at least until you get your first Time Extention. Your BLMs should be trying to killsteal off the melees. This way you get either Perlescent or Azure light. If you start getting the "strong light" chests, start focusing on pearlescent kills to up drop rate. Once you get your third TE, just start killing as quickly as possible. Mages toss nukes (Alacrity) if they have MP, but otherwise they're chest openers. Let the Black mages or Summoner open the blue restore chests so they can get MP and nuke more. Chest Priority is Time Extention > Gold/Ebon light chests > Exp > Cruor > Silver Light > Temp Item. Gold chests mix in depending how good the item is.
If your chest rate drops off (keep at least 2/3), get perlescent kills. If your time is running out, stop WS killing and try to get magic/melee kills. WS kills will help generate red chests and up your xp/kill. Assuming your alliance is there for xp, you want as many red chests as quickly as possible, and just enough blue chests to keep time-neutral. Try to keep at least a 60 minute buffer for time chests.

If you cannot get Azure Light within the first few magic kills, you probably need to change monster types.
If you cannot get another type of light (Perlescent -> Ruby -> Amber in order of criticalness) even when you're killing in the appropriate way, then your xp/hr will be much worse than it could be, but probably still at least comparable to a good merit party.

One more tip, when you're getting started kills, encourage your bards to Soul Voice Marches and encourage the BLMs to spam their Temp items in order to get faster DoT/magic kills. People should really be using their 2-hours whenever they're up and needed.
