A nice light drink I always have when I want a good buzz, and not trying to get totally smashed, is a greyhound. Its vodka + grapefruit juice ... of course you have to first like the taste grapefruit juice, which I do! Otherwise this might not be the choice for you.

Why anyone drinks with the goal of getting trashed is beyond me...if/when I drink, I do it for the flavor, like a cup of coffee after a good meal.

Most mixed drinks where it's some small quantity of alcohol that has been diluted by another substance are good ideas to start with since they allow you to acclimate to the alcohol itself in its different forms. Alcohol as a base substance tastes the same, but the different ways its prepared in your different varieties of mixtures makes for wildly different feedback to the palette.

I had a beer for my first and hated it, but then enjoyed a mudslide and rum and coke later. I'm still experimenting with beers (I have a few in my fridge to try after some suggestions in that beer thread :D), not sure if I'll find one I like though since most beer lovers enjoy the bitter-y hops flavor that most have and near as I can tell that's what I didn't like about my first try.

There are nights when you drink to drink for taste, and there are nights where you drink to be out of your mind. Maybe it's just me? I enjoy a good beer with dinner, but if i'm going out for say my 21st like the op. I would be drinking with the goal to not remember anything.

so I'm turning 21 on Saturday and I want to spend the day and night getting completely wasted. I was wondering if the fine folk here at BG had any starter drinks to suggest. I'd ask my dad but all he's ever had is johnny walker and jack daniels, which I think is a bit more heavy. I wanna be eased in to sophisticated taste.

Your 21st birthday is not really the most appropriate time to start working on your alcohol palette. Rather, it's an opportunity for your friends to get you vomiting up the most heinous shit that they can get the bartender concocting, and then laugh at your expense.

On my twenty first, my friends played "Stump the Bartender", and with the exception of Irish Car bombs, I haven't ordered anything since that I was introduced to that night. Hell, I can't remember half the shit that was put in front of me. All I remember was my first drink and my last drink were car bombs.

Be wary of the Three Wise Men, the Four Horsemen, and the Mat Shot.

Having said that, keep in mind that there's a difference between drinks and shots. Order what you like, and remember that most casual places don't hire bartenders with intimate knowledge of what a Surfer on Acid or a Red-Headed Slut are. Stick to the menu, or talk to the bartender. It helps to find two or three mixed drinks that you like and/or beers and wines if you're that kind of person too. Look for things you can take anywhere and order.

But yeah, if its your first time drinking you should start of slow. I wouldn't really go for hard liquor but if you must look up some weak drink recipes. The first time I ever drank I took 5 shots of jager...it sucked.

Also, if you are not fat....... you will be in about 2-3 years. Do yourself a favor and grab the gym membership now, the beer/alcohol gut comes on quick when you're getting shit faced at least once/twice a week.

First drink I tried on my 21st was a whiskey sour. Wanted to puke after. Tried a Captain n' Coke after and stuck with it for 6 years. Simple is usually better as you won't load up on a ton of miscellaneous sugar and bullshit sour mixes that will make your stomach do jumping-jacks.

For a bit more hair on your chest, a straight shot of various types of liquors will get you used to what you like and what just plain tastes like ass. Jack Daniels is probably my least favorite liquor but Jameson on the rocks or a Jameson with a side of water is my all time favorite alone-time drink of choice by doing that experiment. Tequila is always a party liquor and tends to make me puke like no tomorrow but a good vodka shot can turn you in to a sex crazed lunatic.

Jaegerbombs and Irish Car Bombs are good first timers. Beer... Well, too many people get caught up in something I like to call "Piss away your beer syndrome". Light beers (bud light or miller light) tend to make you do the pee-pee dance often and are cheap enough to keep people buying often. Go with something heavy for first and finish out solid (Guinness is my first beer usually and I follow up with Sam Adams or PBR to fill out my night).

My first drink was a guinness at a bar in montreal (so I highly recommend guinness of course), my parents took me when I turned 18. I'll never forget it, the bartender was a gorgeous woman with a french-canadian accent "Ze guinness is ze most beautiful beer because of ze bubbles."

Define drinking properly. No matter how shitted I get in a night, I just don't get hangovers from vodka or beer. I've had a hangover once in my life, it was the first time I drank rum, I haven't tried it since xD
