TV Buying Question LED or LCD?

Don't get Sharp, or LG plasmas. Try to stick to Samsung or Panasonic, or if you've got a little technophile in you, look for a Pioneer Kuro (new). They don't make them anymore, but a few online dealers still have them stocked. They are the best plasmas you can buy, but are expensive, $4500-5500

Input lag, they often test in the 60-200ms region. Over 30 is where I start considering it "bad".

Input lag is a problem on my sammy plasma until i turn on game mode which disables a lot of the post processing

I have a 3-yr old Samsung LCD (LNT4061F) that I've measured between 50-60ish ms input lag. Here's the best pic that I could get showing the high end of it:



I noticed this instantly the first time that I used the TV as a PC monitor. I was playing Super Mario World using an emulator, and instantly recognized that there was lag whenever I would jump. At the time, I had no idea what was causing it and had never heard of input lag before. Now, 3 years later, I've adjusted to the lag and barely even notice it anymore. Even in Game Mode, which is supposed to disable all post-processing affects and reduce input lag, I see very little difference. If you're playing fighting games or FPS, it will be more noticeable than say, RPGs or RTSs. It all really depends on the individual user though. Some people are highly sensitive to it, others are oblivious.

In contrast, my normal PC monitor, which is an LG TN panel (W1952TQ) exhibits between 0-16ms input, which is generally accepted as unperceptive.

Thats a common response time rating for a plasma, hence the difference in ghosting between say a 12-16ms S-IPS LCD vs a plasma

Generally speaking, LCDs exhibit more lag than plasmas, hence why plasmas are recommended over LCDs for gaming purposes.

Manufacturer released specifications often "cheat" to get better scores on those ratings that people hound on; input response is measured differently, or only measured with a certain color response, to improve the results. Not to mention the reference panels they use are almost always top-notch, fine tuned to the nth degree, whereas that one you just bought at Best Buy is at a bunch of middle-ground default settings, or may even be a lower manufacturing quality.

Always check for third party results if possible, they can give you a better look at what the actual results are 'in the wild' from normal people.


And I may be wrong but I always thought LCDs were the faster ones (in terms of straight technological potential; there are plenty of LCDs that are god awful slow), but plasmas are preferred for any 'entertainment' unit because they have better color balancing and true blacks, and are often fast enough to not make a significant difference.

That may be small panels only, computer monitors and such; not sure.

I honestly never notice any input lag on my Samsung LED TV but then again maybe I just got used to it. If that's the case then it's kind of a moot point seeing as how you could just get used to it.

LCD's have a much longer pixel switching time, which creates a nativity higher input lag and other problems like artifacting. The artifacting can in part be corrected for by refreshing the image more often, which produces surreal motion reproduction and problems like triple puck. The motion can be corrected for by a motion control system, which uses a lot of processing power and complex algorithms to try and reduce the impact that the increase in refresh rate has on the fluidity of the motion. The problem with the motion control system is it increases the input lag. By comparison plasma have extremely low pixel switching time. So none of that BS is needed to reproduce motion accurately.
