The only thing I had to confirm was my .edu email address being active, which they send a confirmation email to. At my school at least, and I'm assuming at most others, they don't really make accounts inactive when you graduate or stop going to school, so theoretically anyone who has ever attended college should be able to join this.

And they can request proof of your enrollment in at least one class (or something...forget the minimum) at a college/university. So if you can't cough up proof, then they just cancel it.
