Wtf, obviously the best course of action is to ignore any mention of sex other than to say it is bad, and wrong, and you're going to hell for even thinking about it, much less doing it.

Abstinence only education amidst a general campaign of ignorance couldn't possibly result in an increase of kids figuring out how to make kids on their own, could it?

I'm not oblivious to the world, but I also don't let me child watch or listen to that kind of thing either. I monitor what she watches and what she learns when she is at home. I know I am not going to be able to do that while she is at school, but I can try. Kindergarten is too young to learn the in's and out's about sex. Teaching a kid about it not being right to be touched there is a good thing, but I also believe that should be left up to the parents, not the teachers.

I did not say it should wait till the 8th grade... I said "Back in my day" which would be some 20 odd years ago. I realize times are changing and children are learning things a hell of a lot earlier than my generation, but I still can't believe that they think its ok to teach 5 year olds about sex. Please learn to read what is written before calling people fool's.

My first sex ed class was 5th grade, 20 years ago.

As far as I know, there is no sex ed class in the country that does not require permission slips signed by the parent.

Either be a parent to your kid or shut the fuck up, there is nothing to get worked up about.

"Leaving it up to the parents" is a baaaaaaaaaad idea. Just taking into the consideration that a lot of parents are horrible, and a) wouldn't care or b) are too scared to address the issue properly.

I don't know about you, but I think it's not bad to teach children that young about sex. Especially if it's in the context of what someone said about how you have private parts and don't let others (children and adults) touch it if you don't want them to, as well as tell an adult if something like that happens and it made you feel uncomfortable.

Children, especially that young, tend to be curious about sex differences. Ever heard of playing doctor? It's more of body exploration than anything "sexual"...usually. There are instances where there are really young "sexual predators". Ever see some 4-6 year old guys running around bottomless and going "LOOK AT MY PEEPEE" and they think it's the funniest thing ever?

To assume children are that innocent and should not learn that thing is a fallacy. They'll learn about it anyway. I think it's to their benefit to learn at a younger age, or at least be exposed to it. As for how much the kindergarteners will actually *take in* and comprehend, that's a different matter.

And sex ed should be taught at 5th grade, or even 3rd or 4th grade, given how puberty is hitting girls especially way earlier than before.

Nothing wrong with sex-ed being taught in school since it obviously isnt being taught at home by most parents. The whole "leave it to the parents" bit usually doesn't happen because most parents are too embarrassed to sit a kid down, explain what your genitals are and what function they serve.

I know some people will argue that teaching kids about sex amounts to "ruining their innocence" but the TV has already done that 100x over. Most kids shows have some sexual references in numerous episodes.

Kindergarten is a great place to start because children are being bombarded by references to sex everywhere. At least giving kids a heads-up as to what the process is keeps them from being totally clueless later on when pubescent teens start playing grabass in the 5th grade. You dont need to go into huge detail anyway.

What's really sad though is that when a recent panel of 16-18year olds were polled on sex they could nail all the various positions but when it came to the actual detailed questions about sex like STDs, how to use condoms or even what sperm does people were completely clueless.

    I guess a condom isn't as self-explanatory as I thought it was....

Yeah, I mean how hard is it to understand that bananas need to be kept fresh somehow. It always seemed like a kind of expensive way to go about it though.

funny story, kind of, my almost 4yo likes to get on google images and look at pictures of her cartoons hero's.

so this one day she wants to see timmy turner pictures so i type it in, and let her click away while im playing xbawks 3 feet away on the big screen.

she pokes me and says daddy timmy drinking milk. i look over and its timmy turner and a chick from the show getting it on, and timmy is giving her a facial.

from that point on google images gets that safety button lawl.

at that point i didnt know what to do, perhaps sex ed for my almost 4 YO?

not sure how i feel about this, kids need to know this shit but at what age is too early or too late? she already knows she's from mommy's belly and knows about her vagina etc. we don't hide shit from her or give privates silly names but talking about blowjobs is something i dont think im ready for.

Leaving it up to the parents is the reason we have so much teen pregnancy. "Oh it's awkward to talk to my kids about it. So I won't!"

    You ARE a fool.

I don't care if you have the best intentions in the world. Most people don't, and I don't want them fucking up the country further for your own personal morals. It's the best idea for the safety of the youngest generation as a whole.

As said before, "be a parent to your kids or fuck off".

What your kid knows is all that the "sex-ed" at a kindergarten level will be. "You have a penis, girls have a vagina". Good touch, bad touch, etc.

There will be no blowjobness at K level. I'd bet my left nut on it. That will come in 5th grade however.

The whole problem is that this entire topic was started by a cunt who got her headlines from FOX News. To them, the mentioning of the fact that you have a penis is heinous sex-ed and should be burned.

Edit: Also, what about the child victims of molestation within the family who don't know it's wrong? Should they be deprived the knowledge that the horrible acts being forced upon them are not acts of love so that you can keep your pristine view of the world? Nah, better to just let them have no idea until they're too old to complain about it anymore.

Seriously, ugh, fuck off with this uptight faggotry.

I would just about bet that chart represents poverty/immigration/drop out rates/etc as much as it does the type of education that is offered. Not to stir up a nest of hornets, but those southern states have a high percentage of minorities as well. I know in our state (Louisiana) the graduation rate hovers around 50%. For many, welfare and popping out babies is just part of the culture and has nothing to do with sex ed. And yes, it is more prevalent on the south side of the interstate in every major city.

Having said that, sex ed at school is largely inconsequential to the child who has parents that are already teaching them what they should know. 5th grade is fine. I was personally planning to start major talks after 5th grade just because the culture is so different in elementary school and Jr. high. But pretty much as soon as your kids can understand (kindergarten is late. Very late) you should start the talks geared at their protection.

Puberty is coming at a much earlier age for girls, I'm not sure about guys but I can speak for what I do know. A lot of places don't cover things like PMS until after most girls have had it start already, if at all. You should be aware of all the things to come, or its going to be a big shock. My little sister had no idea what was happening when her period started because no one ever talked to her about it. Personally, I was never taught anything at all until a mandatory Sex Ed/STD awareness class in 10th grade. In my opinion, that is far too late. Most parents are too afraid to tell their kids about these things, and the responsibility then falls to the school system. We have become too accustomed to ignoring problems, while every source in the media is advertising sex in some form or another. You're stupid to think its a bad thing to be educated. Common sense would say if schools are teaching children about sex in kindergarten, they're not telling you how to give a blowjob.

Sex education should be taught as soon as a child is capable of absorbing and retaining the information. There's absolutely no reason for the way our culture treats sex, sexuality, and the human body as such taboos, and to be perfectly honest, its a huge part of most of our problems.

But hey, by all means, deprive your child of information that they're irrefutably going to come across at some point in a much less productive and appropriate way.

I don't see the problem with it personally. If they wait till 8th grade 90% (If not more) already know most of it, i remember my little brother talking about girls giving BJ's by that time. Acting like the kids are too young to learn about sex is sad. Kids are having sex, or at least BJ's sooner every year. I would rather my kid know how to have safe sex then not tell him/her anything thinking they are to young. It's the parents that think they are too young to learn about sex that get to have that talk about how bad their contractions are going to be in 9 months.
