You will not need that much ram... not if its only for FF14.
I'll be doing more than just ff14
I have a million and one movies and about 20 gigs of music, plus I plan on playing other games on there too.
If you're spending that much, get a SSD for the OS and other programs. The speed from that is worth every penny and more.
12 may be overboard, but I do plan to do a lot with this machine, if 8 is more reasonable I can always just take the other 4 of the list
yea 8gigs is fine. 12 wont be a noticeable improvement
i7 930s are out no need for 920
also Im not 100% but someone posted findings that FF14 does not support dual GPUs? if so your spending much more. Then again it will come in handy for other games that might.
Double check your getting an antec 900 V2 instead of V1, or get a 1200
Newegg deal on V2 in an hour for $70

Thats the one I'm looking at getting, though if there's better for more I can do that.
You dont need a 200 GB SSD drive. 64GB should be fine for the OS and a few other files.
You do not want to use the drive as a normal drive, as I think most SSD drives only have a life of about 100,000~500,000 read/wright's(that is not a lot)
A 50-100GB SSD should be fine for what it's best for, yeah - still expensive, but seriously, there's basically nothing else you can do that'll boost your system's responsiveness as much.
That said, an SSD should last at least as long as a normal HDD. They do have limited writes, but the firmware works around that (you want one with TRIM support, as they otherwise slow down as they fill up). Basically, they don't keep overwriting the same blocks, they work through all of them to spread out the "wear".
HDDs in general wear out, and the way SSDs are designed they should last at least as long as a mechanical HDD.
The reason you don't want to use them for things other than OS/apps is because of the much higher cost/GB. It'd be stupid to pay $200 for an 80GB drive only to fill it with HD video files when you could buy around 3TB of (slower) space for the same money. The reason SSDs excel so much for OS n' all is their extremely fast random access speeds for those tiny OS files that it otherwise has to bounce all over the disk to read.
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I'm updating the OP with what everyone recommended. Let me know what you think.
OCZ Vertex 2 100GB? This one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-529-_-Product ?
'cause that's a good one.
If you aren't shifting data drives over, you should supplement that with a mechanical HDD for storing larger files, or even big game installs.
Yeah the one you linked is the same I had posted. I do have an external HD I can store all my music and movies, and big installs too. Other than that, does everything else look like I'd work together just fine? Also, I don't know much about video cards, I just want something that will play a few of my games with no trouble at all on max or pretty high settings.
Unless your external drive is hooked up with eSATA, I would still get an internal for larger installs n' stuff. USB 2.0 is still a lot slower than internal connections.
Does look like it should work together fine. 5870 is a solid card, if it's not stretching your budget to include.
Nah, It's actually down to $1600 as opposed to the $2100. I can throw in a hdd though, since my external isn't an esata. Thanks for the help.
Looks okay. If you're just using the SSD for OS (like myself) and have everything else on other HDD's, you could drop down to a 40GB. Linked below is the one I use which works great, and W7 64bit only takes around 20GB of space or so.
