yeah, or "you dont have this attribute high enough for the class youre playing, go home"

i think we experienced such a high amount of limitations from XI we are suffering from PTSD! FFXI shell shock. Im trusting it will be more broad and open, otherwise i dont think people are going to torture themselves like they did in XI.

You underestimate the power of this. Even in a "your rules your way" environment people still find a way to fuck that by making you stick to cookie cutter builds.

Actually i think its people that make games that way, and in this game even more so, narrow minded thinking and fear of failure generally cause people to become robots, even if they are wrong. There was a time in ffxi when people said moving parties sucked, then came ramperes tomb. People said you have to do SC everytime, then they found out that wasnt necessary. The truth is these games are more open than people think, its just that everyone follows some blueprint and tells everyone else they suck or they cant do it that way till someone proves em wrong

In this game i think its even more open, until people force people to think there is only one answer to a question. But on the + side this game seems like it will have enough content that you can say screw those people and still have a fun time with smaller groups doing what you shouldnt be able to do.

edit: oh yeah and about people mentioning tank dd healer, thats not necessary, a bunch of games goin a way from this sterotype, because it really is just one way to do things, go check out guild wars 2

A friend of mine is also wondering about Lalafell names. Of course, he asked after Thursday's mini-test, so I hadn't made any notes. Anyone have any of these written down, and whether they were for male/female, plainsfolk/dunesfolk? If not, I know what I'll be spending some time on Tuesday/Wednesday doing.

RNGs were pullers at one point in this game). Let's not forget how much steeper the EXP/Level was at the time too.
I remember KRT parties where we laughed at your puny 4k/hr while getting maybe 6k ourselves :<

anyone who started after ToAU came out has no idea how much 'fun' they missed.

although I did sometimes pine for the days of only needing to exp on my 75 jobs if I was about to lose my buffer, even if it meant having 4k/hr be the standard to get it

Lalafell Female Plainsfolk iirc - Sisipu, so similar to XI's naming for taru females
Roegadyn I didn't get to write it down but it's not the "native american" styled naming Galkas had.

I have this gut feeling that this game is gonna have a shit ton of min/maxing and cookie cutting in end game. "What you don't have X ability from Z class?! Fuckin n00b."

In before "That happens in every game."

The best class in this game is -Freelancer- or -Onion Knight- lol.

That's actually why I'm not sure if I like the new website's ability to display your currently allocated points and skills. If anything, it just provides an easy way for people to easily discriminate against whatever they think isn't overpowered for endgame.

Also, that happens in every game (that you play with other people in.)

    Min/Maxing? Probably.
    Cookie-Cutting? Not so sure.

Any chosen path will likely have stats that benefit you more than others and you'll want as many of them as you can get. However, unless job-specific traits and abilities make anything other than one role or one set of roles powerful, HOW you min/max might not be limited to a predictable string of builds.

I wouldn't worry about the website that much. With how quickly you can change your stat allocation and job for that matter, I don't see it being used in the way you're thinking. You can check someone's build out, but who's to say they weren't just messing around or testing stuff out ya know?

I'm not sure on how quick the player website updates, but it seems like it wouldn't be all that useful in gauging a person's skills in an endgame setting.

I'm with most in hoping for less cookie-cutter bullshit, but we all know that probably isn't going to happen. Someone is going to find out the most efficient way of doing shit and others will copy. It's almost unavoidable. I do have hopes that this game will try to break that mould though.

As long as there are hardcore progression linkshells, there will always be a build for each class that's passed down and adopted by the rest.

There's going to be alot of those casual type players that don't have a who what knew about how to distribute their stats and know what abilities to use.

These "cookie cutter" ability/stat/gear setups will be there for sure but there can definately be multiple cookie cutters for a single class depending on the desired role that you wish to perform. Also, you have to take into account which type of monster/s you're fighting because certain elements of setups can change based on the enemy.

yeah cookie cutter is in some ways unavoidable, however if the game is designed well its more in the mind than in reality. If the game has many different types of mobs or situations, then its hard to say what is best, it will depend on what you re fighting/doing. And at the end of the day how you want to do it. People are already trying to cookie cutter up the game, defining you as tank healer or DD so they can better measure you and themselves. Hopefully though the game is varied enough that they ll need a bunch of cookie cutters, and some that you can figure out on your own without having to follow someone elses blueprint

I figured out that the game has a menu options .exe in the game folder.
    its called ffxivconfig.exe

in there you can change the game to fullscreen, rez and the usual stuff.
Just letting ya'll know, I think this was a pretty good find.

Isn't this the same .exe you'll find the Start Menu -> SE Folder -> FFXIV Config shortcut?

if you have drivers for PS3 controller, type MotionJoy Virtual Controller drivers for the dualshock3 controller works like a dream.

the 3-axis in the controller can be used as a neat function to steer the camera.

Is there a 'tail' option for Roegadyns? I demand it!
