What with the hopes they are naive (or blinded) enough not to see the design problems ?

What design problems? You couldn't control FFXIII with mouse? You couldn't jump in FFXII? FLAWED! NAIVE!

I'll amend it then: many BG FFXI players, but not all. Hell, it couldn't be all: I'm a BG FFXIer, and I want everyone to play. More money should hopefully equal more time spent improving the game!

I see the difference, though, Hyan. You look at fluff as if its a problem that needs to (or in your case, doesn't need to be, AKA. not putting it in at all) be fixed. I look at fluff as something that'll extend the life of a game outside of simply fighting, crafting, and eventually botting. I remember the good ol' days of holding and attending LS meetings. We used to either all sit on the ground outside of the crag at dem, or on the floor of the chateu's garden. Wouldn't be some groundbreaking inclusion to have the ability to interact with the environment; to sit on a chair or kneel or lean against a wall: pure fluff. It would, however, give the illusion (if nothing else) of a immersive world that we're investing so much of our time into.

If this game gets slammed in reviews, its going to be because of its stiffness. Fortunately for the actual game, FFXI was similar, so the core players won't even notice. Its going to make things tough for Wada (along with other things, like controls if they aren't fixed, or the high PC requirements, which I don't mind at all) to achieve his large goal of well over a million subs. As much as we love to slam gaming magazines and review sites (and I'm right at the forefront), a good review goes a long way toward a game selling, whether is a good game or not in actual practice.

far as this whole mouse issue, i think the problem boils down to, the jp developers in charge of the mouse control dont play western rpgs, they learned mouse controls differently, to them the ffxi mouse is the norm and comfortable mouse controls. So unless you guys are saying specifically we want the mouse to turn faster or control like this, i dont know if they know what you mean by mouse ocntrols are messed up. tanaka said specifically he played ffxi and ffxiv with mouse and kb in some interview.

that said, im a big proponent of controllers in games, my hands arent meant to do the mouse kb thing, when its well designed its generally more intuitive, im all for options though.

that said, in truth if they can capture the ff market they ll be fine, i doubt they will though, i dont even know how well this game is being marketed. And i think a lot of the magazine reviewers seem partial to what they are already used to, and love, i dont expect them to be jumping teams till after they see how the game does, if at all.

I think the idea is that people want a simple UI with mouse capabilities for whatever they want. My experiences offer a pretty good option for that.

PS - I'm only using my experiences as an example...not trying to fire up a FF v. my experiences convo etc.
I found wow's mouse controls terrible personally, especially when the target boxes for mouse selection and the nameplates/object models 1) didn't match up, and 2) didn't overlap the same ways.

which is why I set up wow to be keyboard only controls for everything but camera control (which was necessary to allow fast 180 degree turns in pvp, something FFXIV won't probably need) and some simple UI tasks, like selecting items in inventory.

anyway, I think several of us are pretty much in consensus: the current controls blow and the best solution is to add additional options - both to improve keyboard control and to add mouse controls.

..it sounds like the gamepad controls are pretty good though

^ I have to admit the gamepad controls are pretty much perfect, I can quite easily see me adopting them for retail.

The choice for better mouse control would still be nice.

If the game doesn't get pushed back from September I'll be thanking Wada. For the people who are worried about "MMO Tourist", if they didn't like XI that won't be making the venture over until several patches and gameplay changes are made. If no major gameplay change is made for more than 4 months into release you'll have nothing to worry about. Plus the games PVE, so it's not going to set off the radar for the type of people your fearing will ruin your RP.

I agree with you, but I'm afraid your pleas will fall on mostly deaf ears here.
Maybe just maybe we can hope several of the facets of that shitty system your alluding to don't return with such epic fail or are at least refined.

They just need to enable hardware mouse instead of using their current software mouse. Give people a toggle for mouse sensitivity and bam, problem solved.

I prefer a controller over mouse+kb, but the more options the better.

FF games are full of flavor, just not in the eyes of the western gamers. What people say are "unnecessary" are because it really is..in all actuality when you think about the "fluff" features some want...it doesn't really add anything to the game. I mean jumping..whoo hoo..what does it do really? It doesn't open any additional content, this game will suddenly not become an Ys game with the addition of Jumps.
I thought people wanted some type of terrain traversal so the tiniest pebble or dip in the grass wouldn't block their movement. If people just want jump as an emote that is stupid fluff.

if your graphics are informing your path algorithm to this extent, one or the other is coded incredibly, horribly, wrong.

Ugh I don't know which class to try out tonight. I wanted to be a Conjurer because I like being a mage....but everyone is saying they suck!

Try them out and see for yourself so you'll know when the game is out for real?

That aside, trying to pick a class now based on power seems like a really bad idea to me. The jobs will probably under go from a ton of short ton changes, and several more over the long run. Whatever's good now will get fiddled with, and whatever's bad now will get fiddle with, and there's no way to know when what will end up where.

Just try messing around on something you like the feel of, and trust that it'll eventually balance out. If you find out you can't stand the way it plays when you're testing it... then you've got a good reason to try out something else. If you like the feel of mages, I say go for it.

Could just be me, but I don't think travel is as bad now. I don't seem to get hung on little things as badly. I still can't drop off a ledge that's over 3 ft tall or so, but considering I can walk over ledges of roughly that height, it seems much better.
