You better run.
Well I got to test last night for a few hours. I was rather impressed for the most part. Did the treasures of the main, thought it was kind of boring, but nice cut scenes and looks really good. Then I did the leves at bearded rock or whatever, I was playing solo and was doing 3 or 4 stars, probably could of done higher because they were easy. I have some complaints about minor stuff, that I'm sure will be fixed and I will keep them to myself. All in all, i'm very excited for this game and can see myself getting sucked in for the next few years....
I'm not trying to make any WoW vs FF discussions so don't take it that way, I'm just saying that the recent betas i have taken part in cata/aion/this havn't been always top of their game, yes they do have problems but i'm merely venting that attempting to log in for 7 hours due to crappy technical issues is extremely frustrating.
Due to technical difficulties, we have ended the Beta Test currently under way at 6:40 (PDT).
LOL
Just glad I got my skull valley leves done. A new hood, a new circlet, and some sloppy slops for my troubles. If I had known the shit would have blown up today, I'd have stayed up late last night and just called in early this morning instead.
The others are correct, though: this is about the long and short of a beta for a brand new game. You can't really compare a beta for an expansion pack vs. a beta for a brand new title. I just hope they push forward to the 24/7 plan as soon as possible. I'm sure much of the reason the servers are so clogged now is because we're down to like, one test a week.
If you only have one shot at getting your heroin fix for the week, of COURSE you're going to be there, bright and early, ready to swamp the food cart.
I'm disappointed that I woke up this morning to find the beta canceled yet again. At least I got to play this time though...got Conjurer level 2 and Physical level 5....still don't understand it all in regards to having a physical level.
inb4 game pushed back to 2011
Pretty sure that was what happened on Thursday really. Whatever plan they had to fix the lobby for today clearly did not work on the scale they had hoped; admittedly, logging in today was better than it was on Thursday. How the teleport system got dragged into this is anyone's guess.
the test servers will open again later today from my understanding, dunno if it will be worth the amount of time and if everyone wil get in but thats what it says on the beta website.
Here's another awesome beta testing story to add to the rest:
Attempt #1: Tried logging in at 7PM PST. This was my first shot at beta (had been out of town) so I tried making a character... error message. It also didn't store my character data but would show my character's picture next to the others on the "type" screen and concurrent screens throughout when I would try to make a new character. Obviously a bug. Kept attempting to log in and failing while doing others things for about 2 hours... after failing on making 7 or 8 characters I just spammed through the character creating in hopes of just being able to actually play the game.
I finally logged on around 9:30PM PST only to find the server to be laggy and my character is jumping all over the place (I have a new PC which bench-marked over 5k so this shouldn't happen). Tried to start a leve, beta crashed and couldn't log back in, and went to sleep for a few hours.
Attempt #2: Woke up around 2AM PST only to see the error message about the log-ins on dev-na... went back to bed.
Attempt #3: Woke up at 5AM PST and tried again, wasn't able to log in but got in a queue once of over 100+ as it was the end of JP primetime. Waited in the queue for about 5 minutes before receiving a time-out error. Just gave up and got ready for work.
-----------------
In conclusion, what a disappointment. I understand it's only a beta but honestly, I can't even log-in to play the game so I can give my feedback? This is ridiculous. I could understand if this was their first MMO and they were learning as they went along with the process, but all of these mistakes shouldn't be happening with FFXI under their belt.
In regards to people saying it's for "load and server testing", I'm going to call BS on that. I'm not an IT professional but I do work for an eCommerce company and deal with load testing from time to time. From my understanding in speaking with our IT guys, there are ways to simulate a server or series of servers to receive thousands of hits at the same moment to gameplan tactics for when moments like this occur to minimize server congestion. Maybe it's different with gaming, but it would seem silly to think there's no way to simulate this as well with online games. Instead, SE decides to frustrate their hardcore players and champions of their games just to achieve the same result.
On another note, I completely understand now why people are bitching about the controls. I'm fine with keyboard only, but why does it need to be in compact mode by default? It's so much more uncomfortable than using the num pad. Next beta I think I'm going to use my logitech controller though and see how that feels.
I'd say they are unrelated.
The login issues were probably caused (as already mentioned) by the shear number of people who suddenly had the client downloaded, but changes to the server in the Thursday patch notes seemed to bring back the server "desync" bug where mobs and NPCs didn't load for people.
The login issues are still bad today, but the mobs are all there AFAIK for people. Whatever fix they put in place for that though has people crashing on zoning now instead.
I agree with Lucavi, the sooner they move to 24/7 server uptime the sooner the problem might be resolved. Most people are storming the gates to get in whatever gameplay they can get in these test windows.
With servers up all the time people will log in at times convenient to them.
Maybe their IT/Networking departments suck regionally?
Not as if this beta is huge or anything.
@Biggie
Yeah I saw some videos of it looked boring was just wondering if it went well.
One smart thing they did was require a dxdiag file lol, so that screwed me cause I was building a new PC at the time.
I crashed teleporting only once goin to Linsa, and I was goin to bed so I didnt care about the crash, just wanted character in Linsa
