Lol.
On my third day of playing ffxi, i was attacked by an invincible monster, who then killed me. When i awoke later, i found i could not log out of the game.
Then this stupid floating cat started following me around.
Also, i forgot i was a girl.
i only played cuz i got into the beta with that Sony Playstation GAP thingy... and then they gave us the PS2 version for free afterwards..
I was gonna play regardless, but being a GAP member myself and getting the PS2 version free too was pretty awesome.
But yeah, until someone can built a custom storyline/lore generator that doesn't output crap and an AI smart enough to dole it out, we won't really get any experiences like Sign or Roots.
There was a pay for play text based MMO I was part of before FFXI came along, and they tried to do things like that, but the trouble was there were never enough writers/GMs available to handle it so that enough of the playerbase got that experience. And unless you were on all the time and fucking everywhere, you'd miss something cool.
I started to tide me over to wow... I played wow for 3 months maxed out, and canceled when all the burning crusade races were announced. I never stopped playing ffxi.

It is probably the least intuitive game I have ever played.
I went to play it, learned I had to dl something and almost did and thought 'maybe I should watch the video first'. So the video started and I thought 'this may be alright' and then after a little bit more I realized I didn't know what I was watching and was confused.
dude that show was about humans getting helplessly trapped in a videogame you fucking stupid cuban

Honestly, it would be hell to learn from watching. Basically you can't do much besides read what to do and then fumble traumatically through the basics.
It is a horrible interface, full of lag, with tons of griefers, but the game is extremely charming if you are the right sort of person.
