    FFXI on 64 bit laptop

Long story short, i've installed ffxi and all expansions onto my 64 bit laptop with windows 7. According the the guy at SE it can only run on a 32 bit. I've heard of ppl converting something or other to make it work. Anyone able to help me? T.T

I've run it on 64-bit vista. I did have to jump through a few hurdles, but I think that was only because it wasn't xp. One thing you'll probably have to do is download the vista/7 compatible client here:
    http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/dow...a/vista01.html

You still need to install the game and everything, it's just playonline that doesn't work. That should be enough to get the game to run, but I think I still had a little more trouble getting windower to work (strangely enough, my IR receiver's driver was stopping windower from running).

FFXI it self should run fine if you download the Vista/7 POL from SE as linked above. As for windower though, it does require more work to get running. Mostly running as admin and such.

I really can't remember what exactly I did, but if windower doesn't work then try googling it. The infrared device might have been my only problem, but I think I remember going through a bunch of things beforehand trying to figure out what it was.

for me, uninstalling logitech keyboard stuff got windower to work, it seems fairly random.

As usual, tech support is retarded. I've been running FFXI on Windows 7 64bit for over a year now and haven't had any problems. Like others said, just make sure you get the Vista PoL and you should be fine.

edit: Oh and if your UAC dims the screen and asks for your permission it will probably crash your POL/Windower so you may need to back the UAC down or there may even be a toggle to disable that screen dimming thing.

Well I don't think you ever really said what your problem was, so I'm not sure. But it seems most people aren't aware there is a POL out there specifically for Vista+ so that's usually what the problem is. Oh and the fact you're updating FFXI seems to indicate you're doing fine and should be fine to log in. :3

It's working for now then. Now if you plan to use windower, there's a chance that you'll have a problem with that, but don't worry about fixing windower until it happens. For the time being, there don't seem to be any problems so it's difficult to help.

ok here come the windower problems. everything else runs fine but 2 things maybe u guys can help.

1: whenever im tabbed to something besides firefox, or ventrilo itself, i cant get my hotkey to work on ventrilo or talk at all.

2: when windower tries to go into full screen mode, it crashes. ive changed the screen res to that of this pos laptop and it still crashes.

Not sure what's going on with your windower crashing in fullscreen, maybe someone else can comment. I had the same problem with ventrilo and I think it had to do with UAC controls. Again maybe someone can comment on that but I ended up setting it to the lowest settings anyways because the whole UAC thing pisses me off to begin with. You can also go into your ventrilo settings and see if "use direct input to detect hotkey" is enabled. That may solve your problem.

edit: Also it's a good chance someone may have posted these problems and have answers to them on windower forums, you may want to check there if you haven't.

got vent working right, thank you so much! it was the UAC controls and yes i agree, its a bunch of bs.

still having trouble with windower crashing when it tries going into full sreen mode tho. on the windower forums its telling me i have to disable my IR devices, and uninstall Microsoft eHome infrared reciever. thing is tho, i dont have any IRs or that Microsoft thing in the comp at all it seems. dont have anything listed like that in my Device Manager any1 have ideas?

I can't seem to find anything definite either, but I did find this thread on bluegartr:

    http://www.bluegartr.com/forum/showthread.php?t=90575

Although the guy never really got his problem solved there, running it in xp-mode kind of almost worked. And if you have an IR reciever, it would be listed under "Human Interface Devices" on the device manager.

Do you mean Windower crashes and FFXI dies or Windower doesn't open correctly so there's no Windower and FFXI dies when you alt tab?

The second was an issue that was recently fixed in Windower not a few days ago.

If you have a new copy of the game do you still need the vista/windows 7 client?

Not to hijack or anything, but I've been experiencing really bad slow down and framerates on my vista system, but havent been using the vista POL. Would switching to the "new" POL have any effect on the performance?

try updating your graphics card drivers. As far as i know you can NOT run the old pol on vista and have it work. What are your system stats?
