So, I've tried to watch Adventure Time, but I just can't get into it. I did enjoy the Ice King writing a song with Marceline (character development!) but is it kind of a, start from the beginning or gtfo type of show?

There's a certain order in which you can watch episodes from seasons 1-3 that tie together the overarching narrative of the world better than watching it in order. I don't know what order that is specifically but if you stick to Ice King-centric stories you'll get the more emotional underpinnings of the show, it's really solid stuff.

I'd start out anybody with "My Two Favorite" people which is a season 1 episode that highlights the shows thoughtful side and it's more surreal and absurd side. Then maybe go from there. You have to be interested in the whimsical and the mundane to really get hooked by the emotional core that's developed. It's a very free form show.
