As Mistress said, your grandmother can get a copy of the check. I'm not sure if she uses online statements, but anytime a check is cashed it should also show on your statement and you can see a copy of the actual check. (At least, this is how it has worked for the two banks I've used in the past.)

Banks can't cash a check if you misspelled someone's name. So maybe the OP's grandma didn't know how to spell their name or was just lazy?

Either way, work with your grandma and the bank to see if you can find the guy who cashed it. Then maybe the police if needed.

I used to make checks to cash all the time when I was in the Army and I didn't have an ATM card. Since I was stationed in Germany, getting cash was a huge pain in the ass otherwise, so I'd pretty much have to write my own checks to cash. I'd write it at the PX and hand it to the clerk right then so I wouldn't do anything stupid and lose the check.

OP didn't say, but he did say "the check wasn't even made out in their name" so I'm going to assume it was made out to him and not cash, and therefore, they should be able to at least recover the money, unfortunately, the douche that did it is probably going to get off scot free.

Sunday when I replied it was all settled I had found out who it was sent to, went to their apartment and confronted them. At first they acted like they didn't know but I could tell they were lying, eventually I got him to admit it and he gave a bs story about how it was an accident, I said I'd come back with the cops and he quickly agreed to give me cash. I then told him if he wanted me to keep this between the two of us he'd throw in a hundred bucks and after some resistance he caved and agreed. What a dumbass.

He wouldn't tell me what bank he cashed it at but I can only assume it was shady as fuck. Called grandma and told her everything was resolved and she didn't need to worry and she said she just sent a picture of the check to me to help out, said the back had some sort of stamp on it. We talked about the oil spill awhile and I ended my day a few hundred dollars richer. Wee.

In my opinion you should have reported him to the police anyways. Mail tampering is a federal crime and shouldn't be taken lightly. If I ever caught some asshole going through my mail I'd be sure as hell to get his ass arrested.
