    Controller Analog Stick

So the other day I was playing GT4 and decided to try something new, "live life on the edge" as they say... >.> I had played with the analog stick before but was sooo sucky and still sucks. Who the fuck uses these things for driving or fighting games? Shit just feels weird and the accel/decel is the other stick. Shit ain't right.

I used to use the D-pad for fighting games for the longest time before picking up a arcade stick but never could play let alone pull off a hadouken with the analog stick. About the only thing I use them for is lazy menu navigating but mostly character movement. Super Mario 64 wouldn't be Super Mario 64 if it wasn't for the analog stick. Heck even going back and playing MGS with a dual shock felt better.

So how do you fellow BG'ers play games? inb4 I play with the wheel. We've all played on a d-pad before...

How do we play what with what? There's alot of games that specifically are for one or the other.

Fighting Games - Arcade Stick (prior to that, D-Pad)
Racing Games - Wheel (again, D-pad before that)

Everything else doesn't matter what you're playing with

    Same here
Fighting= D-pad (except on xbox. I just choose not to play at all )
    Racing= D-pad
    RTS= D-pad
    Everything else = Analog

    As a PC gamer:
FPS, RTS, RPG, uh...anything I'm missing?: mouse/kb, obviously.
    Racing: Analog
Fighting: I'd play with D-pad probably, but I don't really have any fighting games to play.

Why do some of you use D-pad for Racing games? Honest question. I don't see the merit. D-pad is 1 or 0, so you'd think for turning and shit you'd want something in the middle.

I think for me its because I'm constantly doing "single taps" to adjust between that 1 and 0 you're talking about. I dont know if its just me or everyone else too but I have trouble keeping a constant degree of tilt on the analog. I mean, I can do it, but I guess i'd rather press left and right over and over until I'm in the right position lol

Ah I see, makes sense. I used to play the same way with the keyboard but it gave insane carpal tunnel, had to buy a controller (I'm not a wheel person).

How the fuck you are guys racing with d-pads, shit is impossible unless they supported the DualShock's pressure sensitivity on it. >.>

For me, as mentioned depends on genre:

    Fighting: d-pad (arcade stick)
    Racing: analog (wheel)
    3d Platforming: analog
    2d Platforming: digital
RTS/FPS: analog (lolconsole, d-pad too slow for that stuff normally)

Well, I'm old enough to have been playing games well before Analog sticks were a part of every controller. It's what I'm used to and if it ain't broke don't fix it.

That being said Gran Turismo 2/3 with a Logitech Racing Wheel is what taught me how to drive (really).

Perhaps it was due to me skipping out on PSX where a lot of the racing games were for digital control only.

As far as PC goes I always had a joystick for analog control which I used for older racing titles, and on the SNES all I had were a couple mode7 racers, and then moved onto N64's analog-only territory from there.

    2D Platformers: D-pad
    3D Platformers: Analog
    2D Fighters: D-pad
Most Racers (eg. Gran Turismo): Analog
Other Racers (eg. Twisted Metal): D-pad
    Everything else: Analog

I like using the D-Pad for menu choices and the analog stick for everything else. That said I'll always prefer a mouse to a pad/stick any day.

If you use d-pad over analogue in a racing game you seriously have some screws loose. But yeah, depends on what kind of game. Shojin's list pretty much mirrors my own. Only exception is I'll play certain characters in fighting games with analogue for fear of shredding my thumbs (looking at you grapplers).

Anyone here wanna play GT and record their hands while doing something intense like rally racing w/ the analog stick? I assume you guys only use the left stick and use the buttons with the right hand?

As for screws loose, when I was younger in elementary school I used my right index finger to dash in mega man X (SNES A button) b/c I didn't like double tapping left/right to dash. Of course being younger (i.e stupid) I didn't realize you could change the config in options menu. Now that I'm older I still can't believe I played like that for all those years... oww my poor finger

I have to admit, I used analog sometimes in SF4 for Zangief and his fucking atomic buster specials. Was just easier to do the 360 turns. Of course, this is only the case if I'm not using a fight stick.

That's why you have to break in the PS3 dpads with alot of good ole fashioned grease. Everytime I've gotten a new playstation controller, step 1 is order some Pizza and eat + play without cleaning my fingers. Get some grease soaked into the dpad and you're all good to go for fighting games. Been doing it since PS1 and it always works for me.

    New d-pads feel fucking wierd.

Shitty as the 360 d-pad is. I find it much better for fighters solely for the fact it doesn't rape the skin on my thumb like the PS3 controller tends to. Never an issue with other genres, but when I get focused on a fighting game I tend to zone out and come back to my senses with missing skin.

360 d-pad is aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaass , and you're insane if you think otherwise, sorry.

The only reason I converted to stick for fighting games was because I was going insane having to use a 360 pad when I played with other people.

Agree with the 360 Dpad, though everyone pretty much knows it. It doesn't hurt as much, but only cause you can't play properly lol. Eventually I stopped trying to do shit right.

I used to play racing games with Dpad all the time, by the time analogs came out I was already used to it. I can do it easily, tapping is the way to go for that shit.

The $100 I paid for my fightstick (lolCanadian prices, was for an SF4 SE nearly a year ago) was well worth the investment of not blistering my thumb in fighting games.

Anything that involves 360 maneuvers or digging into diagonals hurts like hell after a few rounds for me.

On the same subject of thumb blistering, for the love of god I hope none of you played fighting games on the N64 using the analog stick.

Mario Party + analog stick + palm = no skin
