    HDMI

Since the new ps3's and 360's are out, it made me decide I am probably going to buy one of each and catch up on some games I've missed over the years. I am most definitely buying a ps3 though, for the blu ray/games mostly.

My question is this: How does one go about selecting an HDMI cable for a game system? Is it worth it? Do I need it to run the blu-ray well?

I don't know much about blu-ray and hd and hdmi.

I know I need an HD tv for the blu ray though, yeah? Currently looking at getting a plasma.

    Thanks.

General rule of thumb for HDMI cables......

The cable works, or it doesn't work.

If you want to buy a $3.00 cable off www.monoprice.com it will work, if you wanna buy a $60.00 cable from bestbuy it will work the same as the $3.00 cable.

To use the full potential of blue-ray discs, you need some sort of HD television... otherwise its just a waste. Not to mention to use HDMI, you won't find one on a standard TV.

Oh, yes I was browsing cables on NewEgg and saw all the varying prices so it made me think there must be a difference.

Will an HDMI cable that works on a 360 work on one that works on a ps3? etc

Yes, HDMI is one size fits all. It's a digital signal, just a bunch of 1s and 0s. It either works or it don't, so just get the cheapest cable you can find.

Also remember that it's both audio and video... so if you have external speakers you'll need some sort of receiver with HDMI to use them.

Ok. Not much of an Audio person, mostly looking at the picture quality. I suppose I should just get 3 cables and a multi cable switch to make it easier.

In terms of Blu-Ray players is the ps3 a good option?

Cool. Is there anything else accessory wise one should look into besides HDMI cables to enhance quality?

Nope... just make sure your TV has the appropriate HDMI ports and support 720/1080p video.

Already been answered, but I feel this picture is appropriate.

All of this is true, but also there are different versions of HDMI. 1.0 - 1.4

On that website recommended above, I see standard and high speed HDMI cables? Does this have anything to do with the versions of HDMI or something else?

Just their way of saying 1.3 vs 1.4
If you view one of the cables, and see that it supports 3D, and 4kx2k res, thats 1.4

So better off just getting ones that support 1.4 every time I buy one?

If you're just using it for a normal 1920x1080 tv, 1.4 really doesn't offer anything over 1.3; so don't worry about it.

You can send the audio out through the plug that comes with the PS3 or an optical cable.

Most 1.3 cables are 3D capable. There really isn't a huge change as far as the cable is concerned between 1.3 & 1.4.
