Fair point. I cited the year I did since that is roughly when the decline of the enlightenment-era that the middle east experienced as a result of becoming a hot spot of international trade ended.

Since then they've been a joke. Ottoman empire's dominance notwithstanding, they still operate within the same basic precepts they set for themselves around the year 1200. If anything, the dominance by the Otto's just goes to show how destabilized the surrounding territories were in that era.
