We used to have a Cable ISP we loved called Insight Broadband. They had excellent local customer service, and a motto of "If there is a problem we'll fix it, or make it right."
Sadly, they were bought out in our area by Comcast with the promise from Comcast that all old Insight users would see little to no changes in our service. That promise was never kept pretty much on day one of the transition. They lowered our speed (from 15MB/s to 8MB/s), raised the prices (Converted us to standard Comcast tiered plans for an increase of $69), and gave us outage after outage that was only explained as "Upgrading Service equipment in our area."
After a seven day long outage in particular, I called Comcast customer service on our cellular hoping to find out when the internet/phone would be back up. The woman CS rep took all our information only to come back and say she thought that the outage was due to us having their phone service too. She explained that in the area I lived, people could have TV, & Internet or Phone; but not all three. Knowing the lady was bat shit crazy we asked to speak to a supervisor only to be told one was not available and they would have to call us back. The phone call never came, although our internet was restored the next day; albeit seemingly even slower.
Finally after about a year of dealing with the higher prices and horrible customer service, U-Verse became available in our area last summer. At first, we were skeptical that they were too good to be true. After reading the material over we made the decision to give it a try since it couldn't be any worse than Comcast.
While AT&T do have a horrible reputation for bad customer service too, our experience has been anything but. They installed the very next day after the call, and right away we had near the exact same speeds and HD channels etc that Insight had before Comcast took over in our area.

Flash forward 11 months later and we still are in love with our service. A little while back AT&T even sent us a letter saying they had increased the speed a bit in our area at no additional cost to us. While it's not Fios speeds, the fact that we've been problem free for over a year and all at cheaper prices than Comcast made the switch worthwhile.

As with many things in life, opinions will vary and experiences will be different. Having had Comcast I can truly say they were the most horrid experience we've ever had as an ISP provider.
To the original poster, I say do some research and compare speeds/prices from both in your area. Give U-Verse a try if it's cheaper/faster, you can always switch to Comcast if it doesn't work out.
