    BG Medial: Pain medication

Yes I made this in light of the other thread and because of Seanr's comment.

Anyways, my doctor prescribed me Motrin with Codeine in it for my back pain. Used it a couple times and... it doesn't really help at all. I used tylenol and advil before this and it didn't really help at all either so I tried to step it up. I'm not sure if this means that I need a different type of medication (he prescribed me muscle relaxers but I never took them, I'm busy working and forget to take them on my day off to test them out, don't want to get dizzy in the middle of work if I have a bad side effect), or if I need something stronger. Anyone have any experience with this?

What your doctor prescribed is Vicoprofen, kinda the little brother of codeine pain pills. Basically it's ibuprofen with a bit of codeine mixed in. Possibly he gave you the basic prescription, which really doesn't contain much codeine. Problem is codeine is highly addictive, and Vicodin and Percocet are being taken off the market.

A starting question would be what kind of pain was the medication prescribed for? It has been said that not all pain relievers are created equally. Something for one type/area of pain may not work on another.

If what the doc prescribed isn't having any real effect, I would let him know. It may not work for you which isn't uncommon.

I'm with you on not taking muscle relaxers at work. But, if you can get a good rest after taking one after work, I would recommend it. It is amazing what they can do at times. I have a 30 day supply of Flexeril at all times.

holy crap really? I mean the abuse for prescription pain meds is pretty staggering but I can't imagine them taking 2 immensely popular drugs completely off the market. I can imagine a lot of people being angry about this, and not just addicts lol

edit: oh it looks like they're only doing it because of the acetominophen in there, which means they'll probably inadvertantly create more deaths/overdoses by making it so straight oxycodone/hydrocodone gets diverted for illicit use lol

Yeah the bottle says ibuprofen on it. I have 8 minor bulging discs, and a couple that are above minor. I think I go back for a check up on friday, have to check with my mom but I'm sure to let him know that it doesn't help much.

I haven't heard this anywhere, but if its true, people will just turn to other synthetic opoid's that are also a lot stronger (Oxycodone, namely, in the form of OC, or Roxicet).

They "claim" it's because of acetaminophen overdose. The FDA is trying to reduce the strength of OTC drugs that contain acetaminophen like tylenol. I have to say I will miss my Percocet. Another link in the chain of government healthcare ....

the pharmaceutical companies are going to be really quick to start pumping out APAP-free versions of those drugs, you can be sure. I'd much rather have pure hydrocodone/oxycodone anyway

Hydrocodone and Oxycodone are just generic names for Vicodin and Percocet. Those will go away as well. Pure Codeine will still be available however.

Speaking of synthetic opiates, interestingly I've read that Suboxone can be used to treat low-grade pain and depression, which makes a lot of sense now that I've been on it for a while. It's still primarily indicated as an opioid dependance treatment and doctors need a special license thingy to prescribe it, but yeah.

I'm currently trying to get my doctor to switch me from Suboxone (buprenorphine and naloxone, which is only available in name brand even though the patent expired in september) to generic Subutex (just buprenorphine without the naloxone), since Suboxone costs a LOT more ($120 per month as opposed to $35, without insurance). Would be nice to save that much money so I hope he goes along with it.

When I was abusing prescription drugs, I always tried to stay away from Perc's and Vic's simply because of the sheer amount of APAP they had. If you have lets say a script for 30, its not a big deal. But if you're eating 10-20 7.5 or 10mg/325's a day they add up pretty quick. The Vic's with 325 tylenol were also I believe the lowest does of tylenol you could get them with.

@OP just be careful is all I'm saying. Take it from someone who has suffered through opiate withdrawall more times than I can remember. It goes pretty quickly from taking them "for pain" to taking them because "you need them so you don't get sick." I would try and find some form of opiate free means of dealing with the pain, because once you get hooked, doesn't matter if you are clean for 10 years. That "feeling" is with you for life and you'll always be battling in your mind.

not exactly. Vicodin (and Norco, and whatever other brand names) is the brand name for Hydrocodone AND acetominophen, usually 5-10mg of hydrocodone and anywhere from 325 to 1000mg of APAP, depending on the dose. Similarly Percocet is Oxycodone AND acetominophen.

The articles clearly state they're targeting the acetominophen in those drugs, and they don't even mention targeting Oxycontin (which is just pure Oxycodone, without tylenol), so any preparations not containing tylenol are unlikely to be affected... at least for now.

Yeah Norco/Vicodin are available in 10/325 doses, which is the lowest I've ever seen. When I was taking them I'd always try to stay under 4000mg of tylenol a day, so those let you get in like 12 >_>

    Ah, gotcha.

I got hooked on some Oxycodone 7.5/325 for a bit. Wake up in the morn, pop 2 and drink a monster. Made for a great time until about noon - 1 o'clock. Couldn't wait to get home. Hardest part was, Oxycodone is schedule 2, but Vicodin is only schedule 3. Had to pop a couple Vicodin towards the end of the month ...

I never understood the difference in scheduling for those either, since both have the same potential for dependency. I think it's because Oxycodone is technically stronger, and is the main ingredient in Oxycontin. I think some Codeine preparations are C3 as well, hmm.

Anyway it's been forever since I've taken those, but yeah let's just say thank god for Suboxone lol

You are correct. Oxycodone is about 1.5x stronger than Hydrocodone. What the difference in the pharmacology are I have no idea.

Schedule is all about politics. Marijuana is only schedule 1 because of bureaucracy. Look at the number of states that have given MJ medicinal exemptions. Schedule 1 means there is no medicinal value, can't be studied or worked with, it's damn near 100% illegal. Suddenly people are starting to see the values of a natural plant. But I'll leave it at that

Vicoprofen is hydrocodone and ibuprofen, vicodin is hydrocodone and acetaminophen. Hydrocodone is similar to codeine, but it's not the same thing.

Also, excluding pot, the differences in schedules of drug is it's addictive potiential.
