i7 930 and GTX 470 Build

Just need to confirm with the experts here that this is a decent build and is a functional build.

Already order Case and PSU but under the impression that I was building an i5 750. Upgraded to i7 930 at the last moment. Anyway the PSU is only 550. Strictly for only these parts is that enough power to run my computer or am I going to need more? Suggestions would be great! Thanks!

You should drop the GTX470 and get either a single 460 or SLI 460s (for $70 more, which end up (way more often than not) faster than a single GTX480.)

I'd definitely go with a larger PSU, you will almost need to if you end up OCing your CPU and/or GPU.

k thnx, yea akucaen I was going to go with 2 5770's with crossfire but then realized that ffxiv isnt currently supporting SLI or crossfire. I would like to be able to just do SLI or Crossfire, but apparently atm its not supported. Figured I would stick with a 470 and then in the future hit up SLI with another 470 to be godly? idk, that bad logic?

Since you'll be running an X58 board, I'd suggest going tri channel for RAM. Dual channel doesn't really do much for that board. For Intel, use tri channel; for AMD, use dual channel.

As far as the graphics card issue, I would say performance/price (value) of SLI 460 > SLI 470. SLI 470 would just be much more expensive.

Unsolicited point of advice, if you're still playing FFXI go with ATI. GTX 480 gets 5 frames in XI with 3+ player sprites areas. I've heard they have problems with XIV too (but more with XI)

Supposedly problems will be fixed in the 260+ drivers but these have been issues since 180~ at least for me

I personally would get a 600 or 650 PSU to be safe (esp. if you take their advice with SLI)

If you're wanting to go SLI in the future, you'll need at least a 750W PSU. If you go the ATI route with the HD58xx series, a 650W will be just fine.

At the moment, ATI cards are experiencing some pretty bad slow down when models are trying to load in the FFXIV beta. My Asus G73 runs it fine as long as I'm in one spot. Hope they get this fixed soon.

ok so 470 prob not a good idea because marginally speaking i would get less than a 460 and with SLI (not marginally speaking) it would prob be just as good. I would like to run FFXIV on "normal" or "default" graphics. That is, I would like to play it without going on "low graphics". I'm just looking for a viable video card that fits this description + is SLI or Crossfire ready (for upgrading later) and its under 300 bucks. Does it exist?

I've heard that 2 GTX 460s in SLI is equal or better than a single GTX 480, and it costs less. That said, they fixed the problem with fermi cards. The game runs great with my GTX 470, while my friend is still complaining about his 5830.

yea one of the things I am afraid of tho is FFXIV still hasn't recognized its compatability with SLI or Crossfire systems.

So am I just better off going with the 460 with minimum graphics for a couple months until they (hopefully) release SLI and Crossfire compatability?

Why do people say that FFXIV doesn't work with CF when it does? Or do they mean that it doesn't gain much/any performance from it.

Trust me, FFXIV will support SLI/Crossfire at or nearly after launch. I still think you'll get more longevity from a single 470 now as opposed to jumping right to SLI 460. The cheapest prices on the egg for the 1GB model are $229. If you can grab a 470 for under $300, you're getting a much better deal imho.

The 470 is no slouch when it comes to OCing either.

600w just seems so low to me with SLI >.> I guess it would work if nothing was overclocked but the first thing I learned when building my rig was don't gimp on the PSU.

For SLI 460's and an i7 930, I'd get at least a 650, preferably a 750 so you have room for expansion in the future. The 930 sucks up a lot of power if you OC it.
