    BSOD/Freezing problem

    Specs:
    XP
AMD athlon 64 dual core processor 4200+
    2.21ghz
    1gb of ram
    NVIDIA geforce 9600GT

If anything more specific is required you'll have to point me in the right direction. That's just from the system information tab, don't know where to find anything else! I am almost completely computer illiterate so forgive me.

My PC started doing this yesterday out of the blue. Basically anytime I'm on the internet, streaming media or playing MW2 for example, the PC will eventually freeze forcing me to restart. Then occasionally I'll get a blue screen during startup with this stop code (only the first part, if I can manage to get another blue screen I'll write down the whole thing): 0x0000007E

So after reading this thread: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330182, I decided to see how much free space is on my 150gb hard drive. 2gb free when only a few weeks ago i had between 5 and 10. Not sure how this happened as I haven't installed or downloaded anything in a while, except for spybot s+d this afternoon. Now, I'm thinking the PC is eventually freezing because it has run out of memory or something? I dunno, I know jack shit about computers.

If i leave it alone and wander off for a while it won't freeze. Left an update going for MW2 for 3.5 hours earlier without any problems. It's only when I'm actually using it that the problem occurs.

Only twice has the blue screen actually come up without me having to restart i.e. while using the machine, and I've not been able to duplicate that since yesterday.

I doubt it has anything to do with devices/drivers as I haven't installed anything new recently as I said above. Also ran a spybot check earlier and it came up with some tracking stuff marked as red threats, but nothing that made me think they were what's causing it. Plus the machine is still doing it even after I erased those.

Soooo yeah, any ideas? I don't actually have anything on my PC that I could remove to free up space apart from ffxi, and I know that uninstalling that improperly can fuck you over with POL or something? Not that I intend to reinstall anyway, but if there's a method to uninstalling everything I'd like to know how.
Because there's only 1% space on the hard disk I can't run a defragment either which requires 15% so I'm kinda boned. Obvious solution would be to get a bigger hard drive which I might price up tomorrow, but it'd be nice to know beforehand that the issue of free space is actually what's causing this.

    Cheers.

Have you tried downloading a cleaning program for freeing up potential space? A good one I can recommend is crap cleaner also go through your documents or programs to see if there's anything you can delete that's unused or not necessary.

    Update.

Turned on the pc this afternoon and got the 0x0000007e code on startup and have written down the full thing. But this doesn't seem to make a difference because the 4 codes after that have changed in the couple of other blue screen I've had this afternoon.

Also managed to get the code that shows up on the blue screen when I'm actually using the pc: 0x000000c5. Google tells me this is most likely hardware or software related, so following your suggestion link, I've just installed the newest nvidia drivers. We'll now see how long the pc lasts before another blue screen but hopefully this will fix it.

Uninstalled ffxi and only got back 8gb or so which seems kinda small? I got the impression the game itself was around 8gb, treasures was also 8gb, rotz somewhere around that too?
And regarding the space issues... had a look on my programs list and I only have around 50-60gb of programs installed so something wasn't adding up. Right click on my folder with my ffxi stuff in it, turns out it is over 90gb large. There was the full ffxi game folder in there for some reason (8gb) and then over 80gb worth of random fraps clips of gameplay... about 20 clips that I never even knew I'd taken, must have been pressing the record button unknowingly. Some were a few seconds, some were 3 or 4 minutes long. So yeah, about 100gb free on my hard drive now. Have had the 7E error once since I've gotten rid of all that so might have to look into the BIOS?

Oh and in case it matters, after a blue screen I can start windows manually and it can also boot in safe mode. Recent recovery point was the first thing i tried but that didn't work. PC has gotten a little laggier since this started happening. Especially noticeable in firefox when loading up my bookmarks lists or opening new pages, can take ages.

Aaaaand a new stop code to liven things up. 0x0000008E which I believe is to do with faulty memory. Would explain the random freezing and blue screens. Gonna try run a memory test if I can find a blank cd to put a program on.
