Isn't the rule of the road that you have to see the two back tires of the person of the person in front of you touch the ground, and that's as close as you should get?

I drive stick as well, just been a few years. I wasn't tailgating them the way you're thinking, I had just pulled out of my development so I hadn't been on the street long enough to really ride anyone's ass. I just literally pulled up behind them at the stop light.
It wasn't bumper to bumper traffic where I was behind them for a few miles... i could even pull up a diagram of the street
It's not "an honest mistake" when you're driving inappropriately.
Call it being a douche all you like, tailgating and people that can't fucking grasp the concept of turning into their own lane and cost every damn person in America time every fucking day because you never know if some dipshit is going to be too lazy to turn his wheel an extra inch and therefore people can't turn left and right at the same time... my 2 biggest pet peeves. Not even just with driving, just my 2 biggest pet peeves, period.
Varies by state. Since Sean is in MD I'll use shit from their driver's handbook (shit you learn before you get your permit)
Again, I have no doubt Sean wasn't trying to be a dick and it was purely an accident, but it is a bad habit to get into, and in some cases, illegal.Three to Four Second Following Distance Rule
Stopping Distance
The distance in which you can stop your vehicle is important in
helping you to choose a safe driving speed. The chart that follows
can be used as a rough guide, but your actual stopping distance will
depend upon many factors, including:
The length of time it takes a driver to see and recognize that
there is a dangerous situation.
The length of time it takes from the perception of danger to the
start of braking - 3/4 second.
Type and condition of the pavement.
Percentage of grade of roadway.
Kind and condition of tire treads.
Vehicle design and condition of shock absorbers.
Type and condition of brakes.
Edit: but yes, we all do it at times. No question.
Sure, when I was 16 and drove like a retard.
By the time I was 18 I bought a nice enough car that I kept enough room to gtfo if I saw someone looking like they were going to jack my shit.
So, no, since then, I've driven appropriately. Most of my driving life I've been a long-haired hippie pothead with nice cars. Even if it wasn't simply smart driving, I'd still be extremely cautious just to avoid getting fucked with.
I'm that guy that people damn near run into all the time because nobody ever expects people to actually come to a complete stop at a stop sign.
I'm not this bad, but I agree that driving a nice car will make you instantly develop smarter habits.
...until you crash it into a palm tree at around 100mph...
*ahem*
But then, you know, for sure you'll develop safer driving habits.
My biggest aggravations, and two of the only things I may legitimately road rage over are changing lanes without signaling in front of an accelerating car and doing 60mph in the left lane on the highway. The second I just get pissed and pass on the right, but if you do the first to me and I need to brake hard or swerve because the person who merged is too fucking stupid to use their indicators I will make their life miserable and scare the shit out of them for at least a mile.
Can't get rid of all bad habits.
I also turn into the correct lane, then signal and move to the next.
I also literally count the 4 second rule above 50, 2 below.
Ever been pulled over for changing lanes and only signaling 50 feet ahead instead of 100?
I have.
Ever been pulled over for driving with your marker lights on, on a 2 lane highway when it's fairly foggy but not dark, just to make sure people can see you?
I have.
Sounds like a chronic case of DWB.
lol, if I made a post about all the shit people do that pisses me off on the road, it would be HUEG. Living in downtown Atlanta and having to drive through town to school everyday didn't help.

driving while in a black convertible mustang gt while teenaged
although, kinda funny, one time I had a huge black dude in my car (his name was Nuke, lol), I came up to a 4 way stop, and a cop stopped to my right
I waited about a minute, then finally went because they clearly weren't going to move until I did...
Pulled me over for failure to yield.
fun stuff
edit from reading last post:
Yeah. I bought my mustang when I was living in Tampa. Ugh.
My first year in Florida, I thought these were the shittiest drivers ever, then I went back home ot Cincy for a month, and New Jersey for a week.
then I realized that it doesn't really matter where you are from, most people suck at driving.
Although the old people down here really suck.
Hurricane season 2-3 months a year, wasn't even raining that bad today.
But people still went 20mph with their hazards on.
Really, it just seems like the south drives like they do everything else. Show me a day in Boston or NYC where most of the people you see walking around are doing so at less than a marathon pace and I'll show you a day where most people walking around in FL do so at a pace faster than the slow motion videos seen on shows like "Time Warp".
50mph speed limit? Sounds good, but I really think 20mph is more appropriate. One lane? Why drive in one when you can drive in both?
Rabble rabble rabble.
Unless the light is yellow, in which case you floor it no matter how far you are.
Also, it's legal in Florida for motorcycles to drive between cars. Freaky shit, I don't know how people get the balls to do it so much.
Thank god I-75 down here is 3 lanes each way for my entire commute to work. It used to be 2, and you'd have assholes going 50 in a 70, blocking people going 90 in a 70.
