    How much is enough?

So I'm moving into a new apartment and I'm trying to chose which Comcast broadband package I should get(Comcast is the only option). We will have three people, each of which owns an xbox360 and a computer. However, I'm the only one who plays MMOs or uses U-torrent.

I was wondering how many mbps would be enough for the three of us. The cheapest package is 15mbps downloads and 3mbps uploads. It goes up from there 20-30-50. I have really no clue how much would be enough so If someone could shed some light on how much an Xbox360, and PC running a game like FFXIV uses I would appreciate it.

    Thanks

It all counts on what you do.

All of you are playing video games? 15mps can do that NP

Are you torrenting at the same time? if so what is the bandwidth priority?

Are some of your friends streaming things to their xbox's to watch?.

ATM i have the 20mbs package and the only time we have lag is while downloading/torrenting and streaming at the same time. The video games are rarely effect by doing this because they really don't use much at all.

If you want to torrent, play video games, and stream shit off netflixs all at the same time you might want to hit the 30+ tho.

I have a netflix account that I stream on my Xbox and so does one of my friends. However, I don't typically torrent or stream Netflix while playing games. So likely one or two people could be streaming while someone else is playing a game.

20 is fine for you. me and my brother share a friggen 16mbps connection! (Damn you comcast, hurry up and roll out docsis 3 in NM!) and the only time we will notice lag while gaming is when we have torrents running or are downloading something large (demo, or similar) but just for gaming and streaming yeah 20 is fine, but if the price is close enough, you might want to spring for the 30 if the upload is a lot better. 9 times out of 10 that is where you lag comes from when gaming.

1.5Mb/sec would be fine also for strictly ffxiv playing imo even for three people at once, the higher speeds should have a nice impact on latency (hopefully) at least as far as your connection to your ISP goes and reduce patching time.

If cost is a concern, get the cheapest package, even 15Mbps would be great. if its not go ahead and splurge.

Dont forget to throttle bandwidth per IP. Dont want one person hogging the connection.

WRT54G with Tomato should be pretty good at doing it. (I haven't gotten around to using it yet).

Link if you wanna read a bit about it.

As far as total bandwidth goes, I say 1.5Mbps per person is the absolute minimum for a connection; any lower and streamed video can be difficult. 4-5Mbps per person is enough to let you watch 480P/720P streams =D.

EDIT: sounds like your the heavy user so disregard bandwidth throttling comment >;D!

It still makes me sad that people would rather use torrents than shell out 11 dollars for an SSL newsgroup connection

Haha yeah, I like to try to limit it to when others are not online. Thanks for the info though.
